Which Gibson to buy?

Thats the thing though, there are dealers that suck, wich can make you end up with a shitty guitar. Such as GC. There are some great brand new gibsons.

Can't agree enough with H2H ... the number of guitars bought off the web that come into my shop makes me laugh and cry ... laugh because I get to charge them for repairs and setups, and cry because those are guitars that a conscientious and smartly-priced local dealer like me could have sold. :(:)

I'd like to address this one real quick. I think this has become popular banter on the internet 'cause of Gibsons bought at MF and GC. Any decent dealer will either take care of "issues" (stuff like bad action or wrongly cut nuts) or just send them back and not sell them. I know I sure as heck do. When you're ordering sight unseen from a website you just don't know what youre getting. Thats part of the weight you must measure yourself as to if its worth it to you. If you can't find a dealer close to you who will sell at the same price or better than MF, then they suck. Especially if they're letting poor playing or looking guitars hang on their walls, or worse yet, get out their doors.

I agree here.... I almost think that Gibsons sends thier guitars that aren't as good to MF and GC.... Everytime I go to an actual guitar dealer (ie not a chain store) I see guitars that are SOOO much nicer than the ones I played at guitar center. I have been consistantly impressed by my dealer (www.guitarstec.net), even though I buy all my guitars sight-unseen from them, I know they are taking care of me. They actually sent back a recent ES-335 satin that I order to have Gibson send me a better one. He said that 9 out of 10 Gibsons are great. It makes me wonder if the others get sent to MF and GC.

Choosing a Gibson is easy. Play every one you can, and then buy the best one.

I said it was easy, not quick.

$1500?

I would buy an old Les Paul Special. They're tone machines, all mahogany, 2 p90s and they just kill. If you want some extra heat, put in a set of Londy Fralin hand wound pickups... woof. But buy a vintage one, that's one of the few les pauls you can still get for a decent price and one day someone famous will play it and it'll be worth more money then we can ever comprehend (my friend sold an Airline in the white stripes' heyday for $800! Imagine what people would pay for a vintage guitar that's actually worth it!)

if you have $1500 and want a gibson-esque instrument, I'd recommend looking at a USA hamer or a heritage instead. More value for your money, and better than real gibsons that cost quite a bit more.

Check out the Elitist series of Les Pauls made by by Epiphone. Equal to the quality of the Gibson and you'll pocket 1/2 that $1500.

Oh, good call. Heritage is still made in Kalamzoo, MI from workers who stayed behind when the plant moved to Nashville. They make nice stuff, but 5 or 10 years ago their stuff was much nicer though. I came within inches of buying their 335.

From personal experience of someone who owns two of them: I know it's just a headstock, but if you're dumping $1500 on a guitar, you've obviously been saving for a Gibson. There's a bunch of guitars that are pretty close but when you play that Gibson that just reaches in and injects itself into your bloodstream you'll realize that's why so many people play them.

well............

if i were you i wouldnt look into a gibson, if ur into like soloing and arpeggio's and stuff, i recomend a single coil pickup guitar or at least with only one humbucker and 2 single coil pickups, ibanez would be my first, any would do really. but obviously a more expensive one is going to sound better, but if gibson i say les paul , with some 57's

I have heard alot of good things about Heritage, but, I have personally never seen or played one.

I don't spend $1500 on a guitar....but...
If I was going to spend $1500 on a guitar, and wanted a humbucker equiped guitar, I would buy Gibson.

My mentality is this...
An Epiphone will always be an Epiphone, no matter how good it is.
A Gibson will always be a Gibson, no matter how crappy it is.
Face it, Gibson owns Epiphone and their reputation is for being a Gibson copy.

Gibson has a track record of their guitars being worth more when they are worn slam out.....than they cost in the first place.
Heritage doesn't have the history and track record that Gibson does

I've never lost money when selling a Gibson. You can get out from under it if you want to.....quick and comfortably.

Fender and Gibson are the most desireable guitars....the old ones are bringing jaw dropping prices.

If I had $1500 to blow on a humbucker guitar:
I would go with Gibson,
I would definately go with a used guitar.
I would try to find one that should fetch over 2 grand ...to buy with the $1500
