Which Desk to buy ?

Hi All

I'm putting together a project studio in a large garage and I'm trying to choose between 2 desks.

I'm gonna use hard disk recording (3 x delta 10/10 cards) but love analog desks.

It's between a brand new Behringer MX9000 desk (24 input + 24 tape inputs) or a second hand Studiomaster P7 (40 inputs). I'm just not sure which way to go arrgghh.

Any advice appreciated, thanks

Hi Colin.

The Used Studiomaster if its been gone through by a decent tech is the only way to go. Im sorry to report that the MX9000 has a reputation thats not very good. Is the prices the same for both consoles? If your using outboard mic pre's you can do pretty good with a MX9000 as a mixer. I don't want to quote but I know a Mastering Engineer that said that.
There is also 2nd hand digital mixers out there for about the same price as the new MX9000. Good luck and Happy Hunting ;)

Excellent, thanks SoMm. I was thinking the Studiomaster is the better option, I'm going to look at one next week so I'll make sure I take a techie down with me.

Where are you getting your desk from if you don't mind me asking. The reason I ask is that I am based in the Midlands, not too far from Coventry and I was wondering where the best pro-audio store is.

I generally use DigitalVillage in Birmingham www.digitalvillage.co.uk however a new place is opening in Milton Keynes soon as part of www.creativetechnologies.co.uk

For second hand I use the reader ads from the Sound On Sound website.

Digital village will normally be a lot cheaper than other places, hope this helps.

Since your in the UK, I'd be tempted to also look
around for a nice used Soundtracs console. You should have
no problem finding one over there, and the old Topaz Project 8
console absolutely blow away anything with the name Behringer
on it. I love mine. Just an idea. Happy hunting.
