i have an MD8 8 track recorder, and a stand alone stereo component type cd recorder. when all is said and done, and i'm doing the final mix, i want to do a final compression, and eq of the mix. my question is going from the the left and right output channel on the back of the MD8 to the left and the right input on the cd recorder how is the compressor, and graphic eq connected, and in what order (compressor to eq, or eq to compressor?) please help!!

I'd make the compression your final stage, after the eq.

as you want the compression to bring the mix up as much as possible before it goes onto the cd, and eq after compression would cause peaking at a certain range.

Have fun.

I tend to EQ after the compressor to give the mix some of the "life" back from the compression.

Try both ways, of course, and go with what sounds "right" to you.

Muhahahahaha....

It depends on whats happening. You can usually get a feel whether to eq first of last, like John said you have to try both.
I tend to eq first on metal/hard rock and then compress because usually the eq is more drastic (a reletive term) than a good classical piece where I only need a little compression and near to nothing on the eq. Then there are folks who eq, compress, eq, limit and dither :) I try not to get in a certain way, I don't save presets except for recall.

Can you compress and eq more than once? For example, eq to right level and sound, compress to equal out peeks, eq again to make adjustments and final compress. I thought it was good to compress in small increments until you reach the sound you want. I might be mistaking this with normalizing though!!...
I need loads of practice, and monitors would be nice ...
