i'm a beginner and thinking of getting a cassette multi track recorder. can anyone suggest a good, entry-level, reasonably priced one? tascam or fostex? and which model? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Yo TigerMan:

You can get a great deal on a Tascam 488 MK whatever; I've had a couple of them; they are not too hard to learn to use as there are some good sites and chat groups such as this one. The manual will get you started but it is like most of the others, it vacuums.

Downside of the 488: takes time to rewind the cassette; many weird pops and clicks can appear on the tape; it's old technology.

Highside: cheap to buy 60 minutes quality cassettes; has mark points; does 8 tracks pretty darn good for tape.

For a few dollars more, you can go digital in a variety of brand names; but, you need to check out before you buy; the learning curve can be a pain, a real pain.

Whoever writes the manuals should be sent immediately to Devil's Island or Alcatraz.

My advice, start out with 8 tracks; it will save you the pain of bouncing and losing control of each great track you will eventually record and mix.

Cheers,
