i looking for an easy to shut off, possibly free antivirus program...

i use AVG now, but its not real easy to turn off (task manager)

any suggestions..

thanks

The most convenient anti-virus program there is: Mac OSX. :D

I use AVG on the PC, though. Its the only free one I know of.

Take care,
Chris

I don't use any anti-virus. My music computer is not connected to a network of any sort.

I don't use any anti virus at all, and I don't visit dodgy sites or open strange emails...I don't even get strange emails

I used to use AVG free but switched to AntiVir (classic) on both my machines after being told this by a guy on another board....

"It seems AntiVir's detection rate is better than AVG as well, and the virus
database is updated frequently, often several times a day. I love it..."

It also has many more user options than AVG (and it's still free :D )
Here's a link... http://www.free-av.com/

yep, Avast

best, free version out there that doesn't overtake your system resources.

Avast. Not just because it's a freebie, either. I still have several months left on my NAV stuff. They can keep it.

I've been using AVG Free but I'm gonna try this avast out. Thanks for the heads up guys.

When needed, I use Norton AntiVirus 2005. It seems to get the job done.
IF you're just careful and cautious about your internet activities, viruses should be no problem.

well, Avast just found 2 back door trojans that AVG Free missed this morning and that was AFTER I updated it.

Seems a bit slower but I'm happy with the switch.

Cheers!

I don't run anything in the background but run a scheduled scan with AVG every night.

It's not too tricky to turn off the resident protection with AVG - you just go into the control center and disable the email scanner and resident shield.

The best Anti-virus protection is to not use Internet Explorer or Outlook Express (try Firefox and Thunderbird instead) and not to open unsolicited email attachments.

thanks for all the tips...
i install antivir today... it found 1 virus that avg had missed for at least a month ...
i also noticed it has a section that you can tell it to exclude checking files that are opened from specific programs... ie. you can uninclude all files opened by cubase

i think ill give that a shot next time to see if it works..

i'd like to know if anyones compared avast to antivir? anyone switched and the other one found an unfound virus?

thanks again

kaspersky and eset nod32 are the 2 best anti-virus apps out there, bar none.

but you shouldn't run any anti-virus on your DAW, it'll cause problems, and it'll suck up tons of memory. the above 2 apps are great of memory usage, but norton is a total hog. run anti-virus on another PC, scan the apps there and then copy the apps to the DAW. i don't even have a network card in my DAW and i've shutdown all unecessary services in XP so that when it boots, the taskmanager tells me it's only using 68mb of RAM.

Maybe back in the dark ages of computing, but most modern PC's are quite happy running DAW software and other background tasks, provided the PC is set up correctly.

This is true even of memory and resource hogs such as NAV.

And it's cheaper than having two computers.

I'll add another one for avast. Everytime I install on a new machine for somebody who had previously been using something else, it always finds all kinds of trojans and the sort. Plus it's free. Great program

norton blues

After using McAfee for a couple of years and being unimpressed (don't quite remember why though), I started using Norton Systemworks. There are some nice things about it - like disk defragmenting and such. But the Antivirus part of it is a big resource hog. And it could've been a firewall problem, but downloads were getting corrupted when using the Worm Protection.

One of my computers started having problems recently. I'd try to run an application and I'd get an hourglass for a couple seconds and that was all - although the app would show up in the task manager. Boot up and shut down took forever, sometimes hanging completely. I read about similar problems with NSW somewhere on the net and decided to uninstall it.

It was like a whole new computer. I can't believe how quickly it boots now. I'm planning on removing it from all my computers and using a freebie AV app.

I've never had a virus and I'm very careful with my surfing and email-opening habits...
