where do you guys normally use a clean pre and where do you normally use a dirty pre? say you were recording a 3 or 4 piece rock band. what do you do?

well I'm no expert, a relative newbie is more like it...
But if we're talking about trashier sounding rock, my first instinct would be to try the dirty pre on vocals. I like the sound of very compressed, slightly disorted vocals, especially when you got more of a singer/screamer kinda thing (think The Sonics or Little Richard kinda distorted screaming vibe).
I might try the dirty pre on the snare too. Sometimes drums sound cool when they distort the pre a little bit.
I would probably want a little more clarity in the overheads though, so I would try the clean pre on them.
I would also try the clean pre on the guitars first, especially if its more of a distorted tone to begin with.
I dunno about bass... Just some quick thoughts. Like I said, I'm a newb so take this with for what its worth.

I don't own any dirty pre's. I do have some fat ones though. I use those everywhere

If you're going for accuracy on your trackings, use the better quality pres on the tracks where clarity is most important (acoustic instruments, vocals, snare, room verb, etc.) and use the poorer pres where the sonic accuracy is less critical (e.g. git and bass amps, kick, etc.).
If you're going for grunge or vintage effect, the switch the above around a bit.
It's also a matter of knowing which pres seem to match better with which mics. You might find, for example, that pre "A" - while technically more veiled - may sound better with your best LDC then the supposedly cleaner pre "B".

personally I try to keep all dirt and mud out of my studio space...I even make musicians take their shoes off before they come in! I don't want dirt on my nice equipment!

If you're talking about overdriving a signal or adding distortion I don't think a pre's the best unit to do this...better to add the distortion as an effect...either software or hardware. I know a guy who used to distort his vocals by adding a stompbox between his mic and the pre...
As for when I'd distort? rarely...guitar's it happens at the amp or in line - including bass - before pre/DI. Vocal's I'll record it as clean as possible...unless it's color I'm looking for...then I'll use a pre that gives color - like a VTB1 or EH 12AY7 would...I don't really own any good 'colorful' pres really.

yeah I didn't own any either, until I got this 1272. it wasn't really what I was expecting, so...now I'm trying to figure out what to use it on. so far it sounds really nice on distorted guitars. it might be good on vocals but it might be even better elsewhere.

Are you sure it was modded right? A Neve 1272 is a summing amp, not a mic pre. It requires some rewiring to make it a usable mic pre

If my memory serves me, it was both a line amp and a summing amp in the Neve consoles of the early 70's.

Obviously you haven't heard of wraparound distortion. Next to it, any regular distortion pedal, except perhaps some of the Metasonics monstrocities, sound lyrical.VomitHatSteve said:

I do mostly rock...I wouldn't call any of my pres dirty..That sounds ugly to me. I would call them colorfull..
The 1272 can work on overheads depends on the drums and the drummer. Sometimes the 1272 is to soft sounding.
Okay a basic rock setup for me lately. (this changes..but this is what I used lst week)
Kick in Chandler TG2
Kick out Chandler LTD-1
Snare top TG2
Snare bottom M80 (w/burr browns)
Tom1 1272
Tom2 1272
hat M80 (w/burr browns)
Overheads Great River MP2 (with jesen transformers)
Room mic Calrec 1161-nuked with Distressor
When it comes to bass..I go for clean on a D/I and little bite/hairy on the amp side. Last few times it's been either TG2 or LDT-1 on D/I cab has been TG2, LDT-1 or Calrec.. Depends on the sound I want and the player and the tune.
I want my drums and bass to have meat for the foundation.
Gtr's Same pres again... I love the TG2, LDT-1 and 1272 for gtr's. Sometimes I use the Great River MP2. It's a little cleaner but has a nice bite to it. Not borring at all. Can't ever go wrong with those pres on gtr. And can't go wrong mixing Royer R121, AT 4047, Soundelux U195... I use the R121 allot..If I'm not using the 4047 then it's the U195 and sometimes for certain sounds it's a meek JM47.
Vocals...I really like meat on them as well. So it's the LDT-1 allot. But the last two projects the singer sounded best with the Blue Bottle with B6 cap into the TG2>then through the LDT1's EQ.
Backing Vox...I change mics and pres each take. If it's the same singer it's a must. If one guy is laying all his on backing voxs down, Then I change pres and mics and comps. It helps layer when mix time comes.
Remember there can be cheap pres that are colored..but in a bad way. Better pres that have color neve/Api type stuff has a weight to it.. You may not hear it on the first track. Once you lay lots of tracks down you will feel it. If you track everything through say a Mackie you can get good results..but you end up trying to add weight in the mix...Which never really works..You really need to capture it from the source.
