Tiny Stonehenge Moment
So, I had another go at doing the vocals to this. I'm never going to be Frank Black, but I'll put them up anyway. :D

What do you think?

NEW MIX:

I just listened to it, now where'd it go?

I thought the drums were vastly improved. Sounded good. It was a pretty faithful cover.

Thanks, Greg. I edited my title on Soundcloud, I didn't realise it would break the link. It's back up, now.

Now I've got to grips properly with the recording and mixing process, I'm going to start being more original. :D

Good lead vox don't diss yourself :) I'd have them louder and more compressed, is all.....

A song like this, it's one of those probably impossible to actually interpret. It's beyond that. It's all you can do to make a good performance quite close to the original. Good job.

Having said that, I'm now tempted to try it :D

Thanks very much, Madmush. I haven't worked much on the vocal tracks yet, so I'll bear your suggestion in mind when I continue to play with it. :D

I agree about covering this song. If you depart from the script, you can only make it worse. :D The whole reason for starting it was to see if I could get anywhere near that stunning drum sound in my own house. I'm pleased with the results and it's another addition to my palette when I continue to record stuff.

Good for you!, I've tried to cover some of my faves and I haven't had the same success :D but I tend to chicken out before I'm finished.

I want to hear the vocal more. It's like it's too quiet and has the wrong space on it. Such a good tune, and your cover's great. I just wanna hear the voice better.

I'll have another listen, Dobro. The voice isn't over-loud on the original, and I'm probably channelling that. Also, I don't like to hear myself. :D

Yeah, but *I* like to hear you. Serve your listener, Bubba po. :)

Too many threads, not enough brains in my head. :)

I thought the vocals were pretty good. LIke the first commenter.... I'd compress them more and raise the level. That's about it. Oh I guess you could bring down the snare just a bit.

I supposed you could also add a couple of layers to the "ooo-ooo's." They could use some thickening.

Vocals are fine. I really like the background wooooo-ooooohh. Very ghost-ish.

I'd still get a re-track on the drums. I think that the early snares really push the laid back beat often.
Or just ctrl c ctrl v them :P

I thought this sounded really good.

I'd never actually heard a Pixies tune before :o (which may disqualify me from commenting) but oddly, I was scrolling the channels 3 days ago and the music-on-demand channel had a pixies track available so I clicked on it, and it was this one. So I actually kind of know this tune and your version sounds pretty faithful.

I think the vocals are great on this. I don't see why you'd want someone else to sing it? I get that they're buried a bit, but I think they sound fine that way.

The snare kind of dominates, but I think it has a cool sound and I didn't mind hearing it front and center. Guitars and bass - all good for me. Nice job!

Excellent cover. I'm usually not a fan of cover tunes, especially faithful ones. But damn, this is very good. I've played this song 100 times on Rocksmith at least :)

Don't be so ashamed of your vocals, put them more out front. Carve out some EQ space from the electric guitars and let that vocal track shine through. Snare is definitely too out front, but the drums sound great overall. Maybe a touch more hall reverb on the "oooh ooh" part to mimic the original. And again: moar vocals! I think you have a voice well-suited for this song. Be loud and proud.

I think you did a great job on it. There's a certain carelessness and grittiness that this song has, and you captured it really well. I think the vocals are fine where they are, as you said they are pretty buried in the original as well. Not much else to say as you pretty much stuck right to the original.

You guys are doing a lousy of job of reviewing this. I wanted to hear the vocals better, but I realize now that the reason for that is that the drums are way too loud. Turn 'em down 2 or 3. You're welcome. The rest of you are fired.

I thought it was just the snare that was too loud, and that the blistering guitars were masking the vocals. Either way, I'll PM you my address and you can send my severance check :D

Wow, guys - thanks for all the great comments! Most of the critiques of the mix seem to be focused towards making it a bit more balanced, more radio-friendly, more listenable for want of a better word. But I keep going back to the original track with its buried vocals, face-punching drums and out-front guitars and I hear mine falling short of the impact of that song. :D I have what I think of as a better mix waiting in the wings but I'm just off to work, now. To be continued. :D

Should I do an MTV mix? :laughings:

Thanks, Heatmiser. When I first tried to sing this last week, I couldn't get within a whole-tone of the high note, and that sounded like I was straining to burst my guts! I've been plugging away and practising all week and the notes are finally almost there! In the shower this morning I sang it fairly easily, so I might re-track.

I think its a great song...great acoustic sound, but I think they need to be a little louder...but that may be because the drums are covering them.
