Where do you think surround sound is headed?

Hi

It seems that surround sound does well in the movies and basic home theater application, but most music recording/mixing hasn't embraced it as the absolute successor to stereo. Why is that and do you think that will change for the better or worse, especially now that the iPods, MP3s and ear-buds are the way most people are listening to music...?

I was a big proponent of surround sound and did about 120 surround mixes for DVDs up until around 2004, then the bottom dropped out of that part of the biz as consumers never really bought in. I don't think surround will ever catch on in a big way until we come up with a new speaker technology that works completely differently from what we have today.
