I have been looking at the new Korg Karma and thinking about purchasing it I'm in a situation and need help. If you have a nice workstation (Yamaha Motif) and a MPC, do you spend $1600 on a Korg Karma or buy a Proteus 2000, Mo Phatt, Condenser MIC, 24 Bit soundcard like the (ST Audio C Port) and some nice monitors like the Event 20/20.

I have a sound blaster platinum and I mix on stereo speakers which I know is not good, but for the Proteus 2000, Mo Phatt, Condenser MIC, 24 Bit soundcard like the (ST Audio C Port) and some nice monitors like the Event 20/20. Is it worth not getting the Korg Karma another nice workstation.

So what I 'm really asking is with the $1600, do I buy Proteus 2000, Mo Phatt, Condenser MIC, 24 Bit soundcard like the (ST Audio C Port) and some nice monitors like the Event 20/20 or the Korg Karma

I'm not big on the Karma so I would go with the other package. Not so sure about the Proteus 2000 either.

What kind of music are you doing?

R & B, Hip Hop, and maybe a little gospel later down the road

You definately want the mic, card and monitors if your going to be doing vocals and any acoustic instruments. You will get a lot more mileage out of all that then the Karma.

Mastermindzz,

You're really smart to ask these questions now. A good instrument is a good instrument, whether it's a microphone or a decent pair of monitors. If your goal is to record, your long list is going to give you a lot more satisfaction, especially since you already have the Motif.

Read this blurb on the Karma and tell me if you believe it:

"KARMA gives you the power to play impossible, interweaving cascades of notes, techno arpeggios and effects, dense rhythmic and melodic textures, natural-sounding glissandos, intricate fingerpicking and guitar strumming, swooping portamento, and pitch bend moves to name but a few. The only limiting factor is your imagination."

That's bullshit, my friend. Get on what you've got, and get it down for others to enjoy as well. When it comes to workstations and synthesizers, be on the *trailing* edge. Let some other sucker pay $1800 for the Korg this year. If it turns out to have real musical value over time, then pick it up used in two years for about $600. My advice is to be the guy buying it for a third of retail, rather than the guy taking the $1200 loss. :-)

Hey! Here's my disclaimer: I'm sure the Korg is outstanding and worth twice what they're asking for it (heh-heh), but you seem to have more important priorities at this time.

Good luck. I hope to buy your albums some day.

Best wishes,

Mark H.
