Where do I plug this thing in?

I'm wondering how people who use rack mount preamps with rear XLR inputs (such as a Mackie 800R) go about plugging in/out mics on a routine basis. Is it best to just get a snake and do all the routine plugging into that to avoid wear/tear on the preamp's XLR's? It seems like those jacks would tired quickly - not to mention the PITA of having to go behind the rack all the time.

Patchbays are usually 1/4" TRS and great for outboard i/o after the preamp stage. Do you use a female XLR patchbay for mics?
 
Simple Idea:
Mid Atlantic Universal rack panel and Neutrik XLR/TRS Panel mount combo jacks, a few XLR plugs and some cable(Mogami is my pic)........

I have done a few of these for folks they are sweet!

go to whirlwind usa.com look at the rack mount panels they can configure a panel with all the I/O laser etched labeled the way you want it in usually a two space panel and can be wired to terminate any way you like. I build these constantly for various applications depending on how many I/O you have they are usually the most reasonable. As mentioned by someone else mogami would be the best cable to use. however rather expensive, belden is solid depending on your budget.

I have been using the pre-cut Mid Atlantic for a while now I may have to make a switch.

The ones I speak of I could take some pictures of the ones I have had made however, they are made to order anyway you can configure them. You just have to draw up a diagram with all the I/O you require and any dealer can quote you a price. I wire everything myself but that dosen't mean you have to. they will com with all neutrik panel mount connectors already mounted and wired if you like. I found it dosen't pay to punch my own panels anymore because it takes too much time. If you need help finding out what you need done if thats the way you are heading let me know

I tryed punching some from a blank panels at my buddys metal shop.......
It SUCKS!

I like the Mid Atlantics only if you need all 16 knockouts. Otherwise those Whirlwind ones are very nice looking.

I have an easy time doing these as the supplyer for my parts is close by so its easy to get what I need(big friggen shop with everything, I MEAN EVERYTHING!).
