Do any of you know where I can buy good quality drum wrapping? I have an old kit that I want to cover and bring back alive.
Thanks,

RF

Yeah, I got those from the "making my own drums" thead a while back. I guess it's a good thing I bookmark everything I come across. :D

i did the same with an old set. at work (i work for a cabinet company) we have this stuff called "skin" . it is paper thin wood. anyway, i bought a few sheets of birdseye maple and covered mine. i then put a nice natural finish on them. they are beautiful! i get comments on them all the time. i can find out the technical term for this stuff tomorrow if you are interested!

Lynn..... do you have any pics of yur kit?

Thanks,
RF

yeah, here are some pictures. the last one is of my 8" tom that i just added. i just got it covered last night, so it is not sanded or finished. the set used to be wine red. sorry i dont have pics of the whole thing set up. most of my drums are at church at the moment. i will post some early next week of the whole thing. i have (2) bass drums, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 inch tomes, 10, 12, 14 inch snare drums. a few different 14 inch snare drums that i can change in and out. also, about 13 cymbals

the tech term is actually "skin" or "10 millimeter veneer" . you will have to check at a plywood supply place. a place like home depot may be able to get it, but i doubt they stock it. you can get it with either a paper backer or wood backer. i used the wood backer so it was more like adding an extra ply to my drums. the major drawback is this stuff is $500 for a 4'x 8' sheet. then you have to cut it and glue it on yourself. it changed the sound of the drums as well. the drums were mahogany, and with the maple outer ply it added a little more attack and sustain.

Those look great!

Your saying that that's a veneer? Do you order your shells pre drilled? I've checked out drummaker.com and I already dig that place but do you know where I can find some great info on building drums? I know there were some threads on this not too long ago but I am in a hurry this morning!

Thanks Lynn.... I look forward to the pics of the complete set.

you said you have an old kit that you want to recover? this is an excellent way to do your first kit. just follow the pattern of the holes that are already in the shells. if you use the wood like i did, use a nail punch instead of a drill to boar the holes out. a drill will chip the veneer. the kit you seen in my pics is actually an old pearl export series. i did not order my shells from anywhere. i just recovered the old mahogany shells with a birdseye maple ply. one thing to remember though, do not mess up your bearing edge. this is the most important part to getting your head to seat properly. make sure that your new veneer clears the tip of the edge by at least 1/8" . the website you gave is an excellent place for info and parts!

Precision Drum Co. has an excellent forum on their site dedicated to drum making. Also, the last 3 months of Modern Drummer had detailed articles on building your own drums..

Hey letterq, where is the forum on the Precision Drum site? I've looked all over that site and I can't find a link to the forum...

I don't know where you guys are getting veneer, but you're getting screwed at that price!
Bigtime!

Perhaps you meant $50 a sheet? Because that's more in line with my local prices...if $500 is really a regional price for you guys, I'm going to start buying Veneer locally and sell them in the midwest!

Any decent Cabinet Supply shop will carry 1mm veneer (it'e 1.0 mm), and they will have it in TONS of styles (Maple, Oak,Mahogany, etc.).
