when will there be a "best bang" canidate for kick drum?

We have good choices for omnidirectional...nice dynamics...good small diaphragms, and large of course...

but, whats the jackpot for a great sounding kick mic? (besides the ATPro25 thing for like 60 bucks - or is that it?)

I have heard mixed responses about that mic...and...I don't want to trade quality for a few bucks.

So, I guess I am just going to get the ATM 25 for like 150....not 100% confident in that choice...so, any suggestions would be great.

It'd be cool is SP or Marshall or someone would make a great one in the sub 100 range.

Anyone tried the ECM8000 yet? It might be interesting, even if it does explode from the SPL, at only $35.

I think that is about it for "popular-bang-for-buck-kic-mics". you will hear good and bad things about every mic out there. i dont really care for many of the cheap condensers, i use an AKG C391 mostly.
spend the bucks and get a good kick mic, if you want. on the other hand, i have found that kick drum micing is mostly adjusting the tuning of the drum so it sounds good in the first place. alot of drummers just fill up the drum with blankets and such....sounds ok for normal, un-miced use, but to get a good kick to tape you need alot of air movement. i usually tune the skin so it is very loose, then i throw one small blanket in. this gives a good sound for most rock uses, and a start for others. with this tuning i have gotten useable sound with a 57, and even an old radioshack mic that i used to have.

I went to a party last thursday...

and I talked to this 19-year old live-engineer ASSISTANT... and man, was he bragging... I looked in the rack, saw a bunch of Behringer gear, saw an Lex. MPX-1. I said:"Well, you do have a decent reverb there, eh?" He said:"Are you kidding? That BUDGET thingy? I only want to work with either a TC Fireworkx or a System 6000".... SHEESH. I have yet to meet a live engineer with a TC sys 6000 in his rack. Oh yeah, some other quotes of the little brat:
-"Behringer gear doesn't count"
-"I refuse to work with A&H consoles. I only want to work with Midas XL4's or Heritage-stuff"
-"I want my voice channels only to be Focusrite Red-series or Tubetech"

Well I know I have said this before, but has anyone tried the Peavey PVM 520i ? I know what you are thinking...PEAVEY MICS??? YES!!! This is some kick drum mic, I promise. We have even used it as a vocal mic. Best of all I got it for $109 + shipping. I know I am no Harvey, but this thing really does give a good kick sound. I wish someone here has one and would post an example. I have only had mine used for one song so far. And it was a screamy punk song, so I don't think you guys would like to hear it.

Dude, the AT's are such a no-brainer, be it the $60 version or the $150 version. These mics are quite often used in the same breath as the D112 and the RE20.

Were you really being serious when you posted that? You were joking, weren't you? Maybe it's time to check back in to rehab.

Has anyone tried the MCA SP-1 LD condensor mic? It's going for $59 bucks at www.samash.com Hell, I stick the puppy in a kick drum for $59!

The MCA looks like yet another Shanghai mic....without the QC you get from MXL.

Kick? Someone here posted an mp3 of a kick miked with one of those ECM8000's....sounded thick and punchy.
