When to use EQ..........?

The not so hypothetical scenario is.............I am tracking/recording thru my console's tape sends to a 16 trk H/disc recorder, the signal returns for mix-down thru the tape returns.........etc, etc.
The question is, considering the signal passes thru the console's EQ twice, what are advisable EQ settings during the tracking stage (presuming that EQ is mainly applied during mixdown)?

I would leave the Eq flat during tracking, except maybe punching in the low cut filter on certain tracks.

Good advice from vox. If you overeq to track and then have to undo, your not only going to get phasing problems, but the stuff you add back in will sound fake. If something doesn't sound right, try a different mic, mic placement, retune (drums), etc. Make it sound good flat instead of trying to fix it in the mix.

And if you DO need to use EQ on mix-down - try to cut frequencies you want to de-emphasize, as opposed to boosting the frequencies you want to bring out...
