Actually, we had a uke at my house when I was a kid. In the infinite wisdom of a 12 year old, I decided the thing would rock if I replaced the nylon strings with some steel strings (my neighbor was just getting into guitar and gave me some of his old strings or something). Anyway, as I tried to tune up - probably by ear only - things started cracking and popping, and splitting and shattering. I didn't touch a uke again for another 17 years.

I have a memory something like that when young as well

I've had two. They were both Mahalo ukes - plywood from China, about twenty dollars. I replaced the tuners on both and added a piezo pick-up with on board pre-amp to one of them. Next I tried to compensate the saddle - the intonation was awful. But hell yeah, they are cool.

I have a 1940's Martin uke that my grandma passed down to me a while back. It needs some TLC desperately, but I'm broke. :D The finish is a little bubbled, but she sounds pretty sweet regardless...
