When double tracking acoustic guitar...

Do you leave the mic the same and same distance and position to the guitar or should you move it around to get a more complex tone?

I prefer the same position, but will often use a capo on the 2 take, makes a nice sound combo.

You could experiment with both and see which you prefer. I was doing that very thing in the early hours of this morning in our bathroom which is tiny and cramped. I left the mics in the same position but I used two different guitars {a 12 string and my son's basic cheapo acoustic}, varispeeding and a capo. Half the time, I don't know what real difference it all makes !

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like double-tracking is best used when it exploits the minute differences between tracks. So, wouldn't the best way to do that be by miking in different places?

Nobody says that's wrong. But, like TheChickenMaster says, there are many ways to skin a cat named Reese.

In some cases, the only subtle differences you want might be in the slight nuances between the 2 performances.
