when do you listen, when do you reply???

When do you decide to read a thread here? (MP3 clinic)
By amount of response?
By catchy title?
By thread poster?

Response numbers mean nothing, it's the quality of what's said that matters. Titles can help. I personally dispise SPAM or arrogant ones. I ignore them completely. The poster can be important. Some here have been around a long time and their stuff is great fun to listen to. I think original music is much more fun to hear than the junk on the radio. I'll give you two examples based on my experience :
Example 1- Title : Please listen to my first attempt ( this is the posters first and only post on the BBS)
Hello,
I'm new to home recording and I got a Soundblaster card, cakewalk, and a sure57. My singing isn't that good, but here's a song I wrote. That's me playing the guitar too. It sounds a bit garbled because I couldn't get the mic-in on the soundcard to function right. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for listening.

Now, this I would download and give a listen when I had time. Why? Because this guy might just be talented as hell. His singing may be better than he's willing to admit. His lyrics may knock me over. There is a mystery brewing here!!! I might even have a suggestion like "Try using a pre-amp and the line-in jack". This is what it's all about. I think everyone here remembers MrLip's song "Wait". He is a modest guy with a lot of talent. I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that song for the first time.

Example 2 - Title : Hey All, Just put another of my band's tunes on MP3.com ( it is post # 2 for this member . . . his last post title was the same )
Hey rockers,
Give our site a test-drive and download our latest masterpiece titled "Super Hit". You won't be sorry, you'll be impressed! Catch you later, dudes.

These type of posts are the ones I ignore . . . as do most folks here. I mean, their music may be great, but do I really give a shit? If it was that good he wouldn't be Spaming the BBS. He doesn't want input or opinions . . . just payback earnings . . . Fuck him!

When do you take the time to download the song(s)?
Based on whether or not you know ( like) the user?
Whether you've heard the user's material?
Whether you like the user's previous material?

Downloading and Uploading, for that matter , for me is difficult. I have a sloooooow connection and it can take 20-40 minutes for one song. I sometimes do it at work after hours, but I know big brother is watching . . . it ain't worth it. Even when streaming, I have to use lowFi. If that impresses me or I want to respond to the mix, I might download. I don't know anyone on this forum, but over time I have developed a sense of their personalities and hold my own opinions. Some posters in the clinic are very talented individuals ( you know who you are . . . your just modest . . . Emeric ! ) and I look forward to their new material. Maybe it's just that what they play fits my idea of what good music is. It doesn't mean I have the right to bash someone that plays music that doesn't fit my mold.

When do you reply with a response to the post/music?
If you like it?
If you don't like it?
If you are a compulsive poster?

Gibs and Doc are probably the two you can most always rely on giving your tune a listen and honest feedback. I'd like to personally thank them for that. Gibs, your more kind than you're willing to admit. Doc, you can criticize without being critical. That is talent in and of itself. I usually only reply if A) I think it is original, or well mixed, or has great lyrics. B) I can add a suggestion C)I want to find out how they got a sound or effect or D)To encourage a newcomer who says "I know my singing is bad, but . . . " when I know from listening this guy can sing better than me ( which ain't saying much ) but hey, we do this shit for fun . . . Right? If someones first attempt is OK , I know that they shouldn't quit if it gives them a sense of pleasure. They will improve with time. Their gear will get better . . . . mastering of the software and techniques will get better . . . . creativity will prevail. I know that my talent ( or lack thereof ) will not change to any great degree, but in the year and a half I've been at home recording, my mixes have improved and I've learned alot. Much of this is by learning about gear and techniques here. There are a couple of members on this BBS that are very knowledgeable but to this day, I have never seen them respond to a poster in the Clinic. Don't know why . . . when it seems to me they would be a great source of help here. The old-timers here will probably know who I'm referring to and I'm not saying this in any way to be critical.

Will you admit it if you like/ don't like an artist?
No. What possible objective would be accomplished by bashing a poster or his/her music? Sure, I don't like some of the genres of music that are posted here . . .so what. I do admit, that in checking my list of why I respond, it makes it more difficult to offer something positive like, "You know, I'd really rather have the repeated screaming of 'Fuck You' panned to the left just a bit" and mixed with a big crash cymbal in the right ear to give it emphasis".
That being said, the mix might be wonderful . . . the guitar fabulous . . . I might respond with comments on that aspect even though I may not like the music and fear for my children's future.

This is a good thread . . . . some stuff here needed to be said.

Regards,
PAPicker

One thing I wanted to add rats, I have a tendency to comment more on the music itself, what I like about it and what I don't. This is only because, although I'm confident in my musical abilities, I do have limited equipment and limited recording and producing experience, and feel funny making negative comments or giving suggestions about production when there's PLENTY improvement to be done on my own recordings. If something's very obvious and I know how to fix it, then I'll suggest something about the recording. I know this is what this forum is far, but I just choose to comment more on the music itself and have heard the whole spectrum in here. Great stuff that I would buy in a heartbeat and crap that almost hurts when you listen.

Getting back to that guy, the arrogant one, this is not about him not listening to my stuff, or a reciprication thing with me, I listen to plenty artists who don't weigh in when I post and that's cool. I'll continue to do it if I'm curious or think I'm gonna like the stuff. I was just noticing one day that he rarely listens to anyone's stuff.

This is not an ongoing feud between him and I, because I've rarely even corresponded with him and God knows he gets his share of ragging with out me jumping on him. But as I said, I'll never be curious enough to listen to anymore of his crap. Never. Have I made myself clear on this. ANy questions?

I listen when I see someone who needs a response, or someone that I like, or something that catches my attention. I reply if I can without sounding like an idiot or an asshole.

* me finds a topic reply notification in my inbox to a very old thread...

OMG, this thread is alive again.

Hello rats.

I listen/comment on MP3 posts quite randomly -- whenever I feel like it....

When I comment -- 99% of the time, I focus only on the sonic quality in an effort to help the poster focus on specific elements of their recording skills.

yeah right. We believe you.

I listen much more than I reply. There is some randomness to what I listen to, although there are a few names I come back to regularly.

I only reply if I feel like I either have something constructive to add or I was really impressed by the music. I don't respond if it's music that I either didn't enjoy or didn't understand.

Not always

I do not always respond. Luckily, I have fast access so downloading is seldom an issue. I don't respond if other posters have basically heard and said what I would say, unless there is disagreement.

I also don't always repond if it's a type of music I don't listen too. In this case, if there is something obvious I will post.

Small print---rules are variable!!! :D

Hahahaha! Another old thread!! Who is the trickys hobbitses who keeps finding these oldies but goodies?

Heh! well you won't trick me into replying to it...

...wait .. a ... second!.... ERK!!!    :o

Sometimes I jus' sits an listens, an sometimes I jus sits.

I listen and reply based on sound scientific theory........

If the poster has a post count over 250 then I will listen on every other Thursday but, only if the post is on the top half of the page.
Of course, if the Posters name begins with a vowel, then that creates the need for the additional factor of the poster being from the west coast of Canada for me to listen.....

Now if a poster has a post count over 250, is neither a zealot or a troll, then I will listen 24/7 364 days a year.....

actually, as long as they are not trolls or zealots.....well...then the post count really doesn't matter.....

now, as far as replying goes.....

First, I take the unhatched egg of a dwarf duck and soft boil it,
I proceed to break the shell and deposit it's contents on my berhinger mixer....I then apply phantom power and if the egg cooks...then I will reply......

or if I feel I have something to say......about anything.....ya know? :D

it's lame to screw up the clinic like that.. Your not hurting me at all, just the others in the clinic who didn't get responses to their music because of your extra lameness...

if your trying to be funny, post one of your songs.. now THAT'S always good for a laugh..

And lameness is something you should know well. ;)

Yeah I'll post something soon, but unfortunately it won't be a true home recording seeing how half of it's recorded in a PRO studio with my BAND. I just left some of my homerecordings in the mix for you to laugh at and have something to poke fun at! Are you on the rag? I'm humbled by your sly retort, however I can not leave without saying my goodbyes to everyone.

hevy d- I love you man. I hope you heal well. I hope you recover enough soon to finish our collab, although I'll never know now because I have to leave. Godspeed.

V.I.- It's been real. Maybe I'll see you around.

Voxxy - I'll see you in a few weeks. Until then, take care.

Lt. Bob - I'm going to miss you. I hope you make in to MI next year. Keep rockin baby.

Rwhitey- I'd like some of those REM tix if you have any left.

pants - pants, man.:( :(

crawdaddy-o : see you around. I still have your number in my cell phone, maybe I'll give you a call.:(

daf, daf I think I may miss you most of all.:(

and to the rest:
