there are also "stereo enhancer" plug-ins. some of them are free. i don't like things like that too much however. it's nice as an EFFECT but i don't think it makes vocals sound better.

the most important thing responsible for depth in the use of reverb is going to be how you set the early reflections. The goal is:
You're trying to match up the ambience and fortify the location of the original recorded source.
So in other words, depending on how well you recorded your source and how the reverb information was encoded on that track, then thats how you set your reverb settings.
That's why you record certain things in certain parts of a room, to enhance. In a phenominal room, depth is immediate in the recording.
If your track has one type of reverb recorded on it, and you're trying to put another type that clashes with it, you're loosing depth and the location of that instrument becomes weaker the further you drift from that.
The technical way is to think of all these calculations for the room, verb times and all that bullshit. But most people don't have the paitience for that.
So the way I see it done (and was taught) is simply by using good ear judgment. Or how a good engineer once told me, "just adjust the knobs until you've found the strongest definition of space and location".
So to conclude, don't forget about the other things:
predelay dosn't mean shit without early reflections, decay time, room size, reverberant level, how diffuse the room sounds, verb time (the RT60 measurement) and even the EQing of the reverb.
Naturally, the farther something gets, the more high end rolls off. Kind of like that stupid art class we took as kids when they say "ok kids, all the trees that are farther away should be lighter. All the close stuff should be darker". (or was it the other way around?)
You can use that knowledge to enhance depth and not kill off a mix with a reverb massacre.
Is it just me, or is reverb one of those things lots of people dread or overlook?
