IMO, the best digital recorders are the one's that are styled after analog units,...

as either 'hybrid' units or 'analog-like' designs. So on that I agree with you. I don't like machines with menus.;)

Thanks for the input Reel...

Whenever I track with the 388, using dbx, everything sounds a bit muddy and "pumping." However, when the dbx isn't on, I don't have this problem at all. Are you supposed to adjust your EQing according to the dbx? Just so that you know, I am totally pleased with the tracks I am making with my 388 I'm just having some issues getting used to the dbx. It seems to make a massive difference in the character of the sound...way more bassy and muddy.

In response to creekster52...

I've been recording rock bands and punk influenced rock stuff.

Teac 2340,mint condition.Found it in a pawn shop awhile back for $70.00.Even with all the digital stuff I have aruond,I still love playing with this old machine.

I am going to look at an 80-8 to see if I want to buy it today.

Peace

Dbx should be transparent, so maybe you have a calibration problem, or other...

problem situation. Pumping/bassy/muddy is not the typical sound of the well adjusted dbx system.

Start with verifying your tape, and then maybe moving on to calibration. A DIY'er with the manual, tools, test equipment & time can learn to do a calibration, DIY style, otherwise it may be time for Tascam Service.

My 388's dbx-on sound is fine. No pumping, & not muddy. All the Portastudios I run with dbx-on have no such problems either. You may have a calibration issue there, but start troubleshooting from the tape & up, from the simplest stuff to the more complex stuff.

Good luck.

You'll definately hear a big difference. I find analog to be much smoother sounding. The warmth issue isn't so big for me, I can compensate with EQ but the smooth lifelike nature of analog is still hard to get with digital. Don't forget, you need to run analog "hotter" than digital for it to sound its' best.
