Farce of Nature

Is that the only way you can program your drum machine, by playing the beats in time? My drum machine allows me to manually place drum pieces in musical bars, allowing me to compose the drum tracks in groups of patterns. Also, does it have the ability to transmit and receive SMPTE time code? By dedicating one track to an SMPTE signal, you can play back that signal into the drum machine and you will have a permanent reference for the drum machine to play against. As long as you don't change the number of measures or tempo, you can record a basic drum beat and add fills later (again assuming that you can manually enter in each beat of the measure).
I first cut a rough version of the song, using samples of it to find the best guitar and bass sounds. Once I have the best combination of sounds, I am ready to commit to tape in the following order:
1. SMPTE feed
2. Drums
3. Transfer drums to pc and do a mixdown of the drums to two tracks on fresh tape.
4. Guitars
5. Bass
6. Lead Guitars
7. Transfer all the instruments (except rough mix of drums) to pc and do another rough mixdown of all instruments to two tracks of fresh tape.
8. Record vocals on new tape
9. Transfer the vocals to the pc for comping
10. Usually at this point I have about sixteen or so tracks in the pc which I then send back out to an anolog board for mixing.
