I'm trying to decide on a subscription. What do folks here like best?

Sos is definately the best balanced. Do not take the reviews as the last word however. They use mostly independant contributers who only have their own studios to test in and while I do think they are honest, they can miss things as they are working to their own methods and interests. Then again it seems proper in-depth lab testing of gear is generally a thing of the past - too expensive? Word is, if a product really stinks, SoS doesn't print a review.

Some of the articals can be over your head or seem irrelevant, but read them anyway. You'll learn enough from later features to help you understand in time. I always read the Apple and ProTools columns for example, even though I don't use either, but you never know!

Why bother paying for out of date information when you have these resident genii all around you for free!

;) Q.

Too true. However, my job takes me to some remote areas, and I often like to bring some magazines (and books) with me to read. It's fun to read the magazines and dream about all the gear I can't afford, and about going home to my little home studio.

I've read a few copies of Computer Music, not a bad read. To me future music always seemed more for Beat makers. However I get an Australian/New Zealand magazine every month called "Audio Technology". THe big benefit for me is the fact that it's only $5 AUD vs $20+ for all the American Magazines ;-)

Didn't Home Recording go out of business? I had a subscription and it just stopped coming.

we don't get "music" magazines here in the sticks.... just no demand for em. Thank God for the internet

Yeah I second sos.

Their studio sos article alone is worth the price each month. That's where they go visit some up country hick in his home studio and try to sort out his sound problems.

My two favorites are Computer Music and Sound on Sound. They're expensive in the US. But all of the American zines pale in comparison. IMHO.

Except for TapeOp. Which is free. Just sign up at their website. Too bad it's only bi-monthly:-)

You didn't put EM (Electronic Musician) on the list, so I must vote for "other". It's not actualy my choice, my cousin subscribed me for a year on my birthday for free as a present...

I forgot to mention EQ. I subscribe to it, and it seems to improve with every issue.

SOS
MIX
EQ Mag

These are my favs

Recording just fell off my list. Too much, "This is a great unit" type comments instead of impartial assesments.

I'm a long time fan (20+ years) of Electronic Musician.

Computer Music is great for hearing about new software and basic tutorials - lots of screenshots. Also, it comes with a CD full of freeware/shareware and samples.

Recently, EQ has has some good "how to" articles.

I'm a big Computer Music Mag fan. Just bought CM75 on my home from work today.

Computer Music (UK),
Tape Op (free subscription),
SOS,
and occasionally Future Music.

For some reason the British seem to have much better magazines relating to recording and music in general...

I think the Brits do much more of this kind of stuff at home than we North Americans.

I like Computer Music, especially with the disc, but I often don't use the samples. Also, I was disappointed when they got rid of the Sonar Masterclass.

SOS seems to be "weightier" somehow. More in depth. But they also have more reviews of hardware stuff I can't afford!
