Eric Johnson "Cliffs of Dover"

or maybe something from Satch - "Always with you, Always with me" for something slow and melodic, maybe "Back to Shala-Bal" for something more aggressive

Just get a copy of Ah Via Musicom or Flying in a Blue Dream, comp 'em all and you'll be a wizard.

You get a big amen on that one. Clapton and Bruce were pure perfection on that tune. My late brother and I used to do that tune note for note back in the early 70's. LOL

I always loved Clapton's solo on Roger Waters' "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking"

Never thought it was mixed that well, but it's a stunning, loud, solo.

Nothing to do with chops at all, it just always moved me for some reason, lots of trickery really, but I always like how the high-pitched harmonics-squel thing blends and fades into some arpeggios...

I know it has been mentioned, but I am going with a classic...Page on "Stairway". Well, most all of Page's solos are great. :cool:
 
There are so many, but Elliot Eastons solo on "Touch and go" to me is fantastic.

Cedrone "Rock around the clock" (Talk about avant-garde shredding!!!)
Scholz "Gonna hitch a ride" (for the Boston-fans, especially check the part (re: short burst) that starts at 3m20sec.. ROCK!!!!

but I'll add some:

whoever in Mercyful Fate played the intro solo of "Corpse without a soul" FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!! Metallica wussed out and skipped it on their cover version on Garage Days.

Richie Blackmore "Mistreated" (Yngwie's version is even heavier, but too much meedley-meedley-wiedley-sweepie....)

Slash "Perfect Crime" That fast part makes my adrenalin go nuts!

Angus Young "You shook me all night long" nice and basic.

Ace Frehley "Shock me" I was assigned to do that solo note by note at a guitar-tentam... I rocked and conquered... :cool:

Al DiMeola "Egyptian Danza" tried to figure it out and let it be after 20some bars... too damn hard! :(

Judas Priest (dunno which of the guitarists) "Dreamer Deceiver"

Kevin Heybourne (Angelwitch) "Freemen". I want this song to be played on my funeral! Dead serious! (no pun intended)
Whatever "Comfortably Numb's" solo is to classic rock, is "Freemen's" solo to hard rock/heavy metal.

Ya'll are giving me chills as I relive all the fantastic songs of my youth (I'm breaking out all my old vinyl as we speak)...

Ya can't pick just one...

I agree with EJ's "Cliffs of Dover"....that one was anthemic...

Also most Page, Hendrix and Jeff Beck (especially "Freeway Jam")...

What about the 12 string acoustic solo in "Bluebird" by Buffalo Springfield (not sure of that was Stephen Stills, but that's what I'd guess)...that's some incredibly powerful playing IMHO.

Gotta go warm up the turntable...

PS: Bass solos--I'd bet Geddy Lee had at least one or two, although I can't think of one off hand.

I love the intro to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue". THAT is a players riff...

1. Jimmy Page "I can't quit you Babe" all the fills, and the solo


2. Dave Gilmour "Comfortably Numb" both solos


Strongly affect me to this day
