Wow, I never knew that.

What's the benefit of tracking this way? My first reation is that it would just make things more complicated.

qotsa were able to get awesome seperation this way, cymbals could be panned ENTIRELY into on speaker, while the rest of the kit is stereo. the kick snare and toms are a lot clearer aswell allowing them to compressed serverely without that horrid cymbal sideffect you get when fiercly compressing a kit.

its a cool idea, and i respect it for its coolness. But qotsa is the kind of band i would rather hear doing "live-in-the-studio" type recordings, kinda like the direction josh's first band (kyuss) was headed in.

I agree, they could definately sound just as good in a live recording situation. These days though, i guess many engineers feel a live feel won't impress the right people. It's a real shame.

Whoever said Don Caballero beat me to it, amazing. Is he in Battles now? Also, Chris Pennie, pretty much any Dillinger Escape Plan recording, but its between irony is a dead scene or Calculating Infinity for me. On a side note, what did anyone think of the new album, production seemed a bit too slick for me in places.
