Harvey Gerst, and antichef, you guys just helped me out alot. thanks a ton.

mshilarious. i have a question about tubes. if i switch the tubes, i know that some wont fit, some will fit. but what i want to know is, is there pre amp tubes and guitar amp tubes? or are they all the same thing? becuase i saw some ones online, but they said they where used alot in fender tube amps and i was like " are guitar tubes teh same as teh tubes used in preamps? or is there special tubes for that?"

In general, a guitar amp will have one or more preamp tubes and one or more power tubes. The two are not interchangeable. So the answer is that it depends on which guitar amp tube you're talking about.

In general, you can freely swap between any of the 12A*7 series (12AX7, 12AT7, 12AY7) or any of a number of mil-spec part numbers (e.g. 5751, 6072, 7025) or European numbers (e.g. ECC83) that are roughly equivalent. You'll just get different amounts of gain with different parts.

Don't try to stick a power tube in your preamp.

what about this? like, if i have one from a fender amp that isnt powerd.. if it fits and works in my pre amp then is that ok to use? or will it sound weird? ( i havnt had a preamp before so i wont be able to judge very well) and also would most people be like "wtf are you doing using a guitar tube in your preamp" lol

I'd be surprised if a preamp were designed around a tube with a 6V heater.... Most pres are designed for the 12A*7 family of tubes, so they provide 12V to the heater, in which case the tube would last maybe five... maybe ten seconds....
