Joe

you see this is a thread about production and a good sounding album, not what you like. and THANK you so much for admitting that you are bought by advertising. it gives me that warm feeling inside

it's only coming out on november 12, but look for Godspeed you black emperor's "Yanqui u.x.o." ... it rocks! they're very particular about every aspect of the production... ie no 'loud' syndrome, and an otherwise excellent recording.

also i'll second nin's "still" someone mentioned earlier.

Their sound does not come off as rigorous as many like to think. Listen to any 20 century piece of serious classical music and youll hear the real deal. Minimalism works IMO when it experiments with phrasing and time. Godspeed doesnt do that too much. Timewise their melodies all lay on the beat the same way. In a rock way. I think Godspeed is cool for an experimental post rock group especially for making violins prominent instead the mandatory but boring guitar, but their production could be more interesting and better fidelity. It sounds like they do their own recordings or stick to budget.
Check out Silver Mt Zion for a more intense and realized version of what Godspeed does. Silver is made up of 3 members of godspeed. Particularly "Blown out joy from heaven's mercied hole" from the last record "He has left us alone but shafts of light sometimes grace the corners of our rooms." The way they build on a simple 4 note theme really works in that piece and probably the best that genre has produced so far. We'll see what "Yanqui" is all about. Its being produced by steve albini.

blindside

blindside's -silence.

great band, great prodcution.

dillinger escape plan fet. mike patton- irony is a dead scene

thats another recent fav. for me.

Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth. Crank that piano at the beginning of the album!
Great tunes, great arrangements, great production, George Massenburg did a great job on this one.
Also, what other album has folk, country, big-band swing, gospel, etc...?

I just got into blindside last week after hearing pitiful. I would love to know what the signal chain on the vocals is. Then again his voice cuts through anything. Good songwriting too. Just when you thought melodies revolving around 5th note movements was beyond old. They do it well. Another Howard Benson production.

dillinger has their moments but I could not get into it. Im waiting for the the new bungle.

Check out the new taproot. I would say they are on board to be the biggest band of 2003. Great production by the guy who engineered some of AICs stuff. It shows in the harmonies.

I don't care to argue.. think what you want... :)

JuSum, WHAT new Bungle?????

Do they have something in the works???

I thought they were still trying to hook a label?

I would love to here some new-maybe-on-the-Tomohawk-side of California.

...and I couldn't get into Dillinger either.

i don't know how many of you have heard of loudermilk, but their new album "the red record" sounds really good..........it doesn't have enough "brightness" for my taste, but i admit that it's an awesome recording........those of you that hate the over compression of newer recordings would love it. (that wasn't sarcasm) it's an awesome recording.........it's on dreamworks, uhmmmmm and i think they're on tour with sparta.....anyone that's into good ol' rock'nroll should check them out.

hmmm

rockin the subburbs by Ben Folds is exactly what everyone seems to hate.. not very dynamic, pro tooled, but very good music..

two agains nature is good stuff

the green album? weezer?? puh-leez! (please)

weezer - maladroit kicks its ass and weezer - pinkerton kicks its ass back to the stone age

speaking of stone age.. QOSA good recording.. death cab for cutie.. good dynamic recording.. a lot of midwest and west coast indie bands have great, real sounding recordings no one knows them unfortunately.. rilo kiley.. dios... i could site examples that nobody could relate to forever so i'll stop.. foo fighters colour and shape-good stuff

Another vote for "Two against Nature"

& Experience Jill Scott (Live)

The best Rock recording ever made.

I listened to Billy Idol's Rebel Yell and thought to myself,
this is the best recorded, best mixed and best produced
rock material in the history of recording. It's so polished
and perfect. It has less to do with Billy Idol's Charismatic singing
but more on guitarist Steve Stevens' creative and tastety virtuousity. It's the way it was recorded and mixed that
made the song so much greater than it is. It's a masterpiece!

perhaps on their second album, We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes (which on the first song alone has a nice balance of dynamics), but their last one, The Photo Album, is limited pretty much the entire way through.

This thread has given me a nice list of new material to check out, thank you all.

The last thing I heard that blew my socks off was Queensryche "Empire". Of course, "Operation: Mindcrime" was a very awesome work, as well.

Prior to that: Pink Floyd "The Wall".

BTW: Alan Parsons engineered "Dark Side of the Moon", not Bob Ezrin.

My 2 cents.

What I've liked lately in terms of album production....hm...none of these are necessarily new but they're what I've been enjoying lately...

Refused - Shape of Punk To Come (wow!)
Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider
Tool - Amnesiac (had to drag this one out again after the show!)
Portishead - Portishead
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Modest Mouse - Lonesome crowded west (nothing fancy there!)
Pavement - Terror Twilight

Radio? What's radio?

Then I guess just about everything recorded > 20 years ago sounds good by default really...I also don't like much of the ultra compressed modern shit...hard on the ears and zero benefit. Yet I still overcompress my own stuff, horf!

Slackmaster 2000

One of the bests

Ozzy Osbourne - Back to Earth
Stone Temple Pilots - Ladida

Man, pretty good recordings..listen to them!!

Favorite new recording: Peter Gabriel's Up. Just so good. So much space and dynamics. I have been into really airy open sounding records lately. American Music Club (Mercury and San Fran), Bjork (Vestperine), Miles Davis (love the reverb on the horns).

Also, of late I can't get enough of Tom Waits' Bone Machine. That guy makes me cry.

[
Medeski Martain and Wood's Tonic. Has anybody else heard this one? It was recorded live with a single well placed sterio mic straight to two track, and it blows me away! :)QUOTE]

They did that with one mic!? I thought that recording kicked ass now i know for sure.

Also i would like to put Bjork's "Vespertine" in as the best new thing ive heard. She did the entire thing by herself in pro tools and there isn't any comparing it to her old albums. I liked her a lot in Sugar Cubes but her solo work was too dancey for me. That is until this one came out, best thing ive heard in a long time

word on tom. I like both albums and did I say Rufus Wainwright for studio work? I like that new one Poses.

To me, Vespertine is all about sounds. I think I actually like the songs on Homogenic and some others from post better. But Vespertine sounds amazing. Such clarity and openness. And very dynamic. Making field sounds into beats is also something I am really getting into.

Tom Waits' on the other hand, the songs are just pefect and I really like the concept of creating beauty with crappy sounds. Tinny, small, noisy guitar parts can sound so good. They add all the colors and textures. I also really like marc ribot a ton.
