Whats the last REALLY good recording youve heard lately?

Another vote for Two Against Nature (Steely Dan), finally picked it up this week.

And in the best kept secret category, Sometime Next Tuesday by Johnny A out of Boston. Very sparse but elegant arrangements. Why hasn't this guy hit the big time yet?
 
The new Bowie is the best-sounding (new) album I've picked up in the last year.

I'm digging that newly released Nirvana song.

And I know I'll get egged for saying this, but I really love what Dre has been doing with Eminem. (I like how it sounds, not the homophobe-woman hater behind it.)

Plenty of new good music this year (really) but most of it wasn't recorded that well.

Gotta agree with that one,...

Bowie: "Heathen" is a killer sounding album.

Bowie's albums have always been well produced, and especially his latest few albums, starting with "Black Tie/White Noise", which then really took on a bigger, more modern sound in production.

I'm a Bowie fan. I like all his albums. Bowie albums are generally well produced, and many of them were ahead of their time, stylistically, sound- and production-wise. With Bowie, there's a lot of expression and substance behind the voice, the songs and the productions.

As far as classic albums go you, there is little that beats that dry flat Revolver sound...you can hear it creeping up on Rubber Soul as well.....its absolutley beautiful....for modern music though im not proud to admit it, aerosmiths newer album is most excellently produced/recorded.

I'd have to agree that this is one of the best albums I've heard ever, but I can't really put my finger on why....
Is there at particular techniques with the way this album was produced that really mark it out from the rest?

Good Sounding albums haven't stopped being released, I think that sometimes we get stuck in ruts, and get too familiar with what we are used to, The old stuff......And then we start overlooking the new good stuff.... Well thats my opinion, and i'm definately guilty of it too.

Lately, I have been trying to really appreciate the newer pop/rock sound, and I am finding a love for it.....


Theres some really good new stuff out there.

you see joe the problem with production today is the people like you think that the hardly eclectic list of top 40 albums listed above are some sort of accomplishment. MOST of what you have is just as generic as everything else ever released. you buy this pre-packaged trash because tv tells you to, then they make more of it because they have all of your money.

please please please try to listen to some albums(start with the classics) that can open your mind to something other than the albums currently being most marketed. theres so much good stuff out there if you just look a little bit. if you need help sifting through the shiney pop punk and nu metal i would be more than glad to make millions of suggestions, ill even start a thread for you.

this is almost a who's who list of the kind of mixing/mastering that I am complaining about

this stuff is BLASTED. CRAZY treble/upper mids and no movement whatsoever....
yeah they have a large dynamic range:-0.3 during the song and -inf between songs

I Buy it because I hear it on the Radio or Tv, and end up deciding I like it...

I hear Eminem, and P Diddy on the television all the time, in fact moreso than those rock groups above... Why aren't I running out to buy them too???....Cause I don't like Hip Hop/Rap... So, I guess there goes your theory....

This thread is about posting good sounding albums you've heard lately, and thats my list.... Not much more I can say.....We all have our lists, as different as they may be;)

As far as personal tastes go, I've gotta agree with Joe. There's good stuff being released that have new characteristics that traditionalists can't appreciate. I.e., simpler arrangements and more compression.

The traditionalists are set in what they were taught souded good and they are less receptive to newer techniques. However, some genres, such as metal, techno, pop, etc. inherently require modern techniques such as on/off dynamics. Unfortunately, sometimes the modern techniques are overused, which results in a backlash against the techniques.

Hell, there are plenty of poorly mixed/mastered albums with tons of dynamics, just as there are plenty of great mixed/mastered albums with "limited" dynamics. :rolleyes: :D

Peter Gabriel - Up (mixed by Tchad Blake, ahhh goodness)
Phantom Planet - The Guest (produced by Tchad Blake and Mitchell Froom.... these guys have never done wrong)
Sade - Love Deluxe (okay, so it's from 1992, but I just bought it the other week cause they've remastered them.... I want all my albums to have bass like this album)
The Prom - Under The Same Stars (really nice Northwest orchestral pop, done on the exact same 8-track that Death Cab for Cutie used for We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes)

I dont think that is it...I think we more more receptive to a variety
all these albums in the above list could EASILY have been mixed by the same person, and Ill bet most were mastered by the same two or three people. These techniques are nothing new. people used to make mashed " radio mixes" and sometimes used to distort/treble boost the hell out of things to get onto vinyl

Painkiller didnt need all that squashing, nor Fight, nor Metallica, nor Black Sabbath, as far as metal

techno? I am still waiting for someone to beat Trans - X, if someone has a better and more innovative techno album than trans x I'd love to hear it

pop, yeah pop can sound however it wants

Morning View by INCUBUS. One of the best drum sounds I have heard in along time. Top notch production on the whole album. Catchy song writing and great musicians to top it off.

Wow I just went back to read some more. I just noticed that someone said Queens of the Stoneage. Why? I could make that sound all day, maybe not the drum sound. I really dislike the Lo-Fi approach to audio recording unless it is all you have. With that said - if you like Queens of the Stoneage. Then you should like my bands recordings. They are made with 57's, 58's, a C3000b, and a V67. With shit preamps and CoolEdit Pro. Except, well I think the distortion on ours sounds better. HAHA.

it's only coming out on november 12, but look for Godspeed you black emperor's "Yanqui u.x.o." ... it rocks! they're very particular about every aspect of the production... ie no 'loud' syndrome, and an otherwise excellent recording.

also i'll second nin's "still" someone mentioned earlier.

Pipeline I agree with you completely. Vox, its not that I believe you are somply gullible enough to just buy anything you are told but what about all of the REALLY good stuff that DOESN'T get any radio or TV airplay???

If you are only given choice A,B,C,D, and E (and those sound similar because it worked before and if you like one you probably wont dislike the others that much and there will be a greater chance of you purchasing one or more of the other choices) you won't be able to easily consider choice X, Y, UU, and 420ithinkmywatchisbroken, because the chance of you hearing about them is considerably less.

Its like politics.
We live in a great democracy where we get to chose the better of a group a BAD choices (a lot of the time, not always).

Also, TV and radio RARELY allows enough time for anything other than formula pop (metal, or dance, or smooth jazz, or alte......nevermind) to surface. You HAVE to break for station ID, and public service announcements if you have any advertising slots left, which advertisers demand be as many and as close together as posible.
There's barely any time for music.
Good music is like a good meal sometimes it take time to cook and most of the time you can't do it in a microwave.

Anyway, I digress.

Yeah, I guess what I sort of meant...

was that your list sounds kind of like what was reviewed in this months mags or a day's list of one "new rock alternative" radio station.

But you are totally right. That was the question and you did answer and I guess I entered into a realatively pointless debate on a deviated subject.
...and I wasn't at all clear about it.

I respect that you like the music you like and I don't like the music you like but I guess I had the underlying assumption that your list represented your total musical tastes and that mine was naturally better, which is of course ridiculous.
