I like the new of the Queens Of The Stone Age

The single No One Knows sounds fantastic to my opinion

Back to new stuff, I have to admit I love Coldplay, their sound is great, their production is very british....obvious isn´t it.....:)

Certainly not the latest, but I like my ELP "Return of the Manticore" a lot. That said, some in the house have grown to dislike it.

From an older standpoint, Floyd's Dark Side, and the Wall have to be at the top of my list. Nice to have an album that doesn't think it has to have the meters glued to the top, but back then I suppose most albums were that way. But Ezrin just does an awesome job with those guys. The dynamic range is like listening to classical music, something that I think a lot of rock groups could learn from.

More contemporary: Everlasts "What It's Like" has a real nice quality to the sound.

Is there another flame retardent suit in the how-e-ouse?

Linkin Parks album just has a sound to it that none of the other contemporary bands seem to match. I am fairly new to listening to recordings and trying to analyze the recording tech, so I can't put my finger on it, but there is something unique to it. Maybe you more experienced guys can tell me.

Newer music with "originality" as I see it:

* Norah Jones, Come Away with Me

and

* John Mayer, Room for Squares

.. and thank-you to them for crossing boundaries. The Mayer CD sometimes has some weird things going on with the voice mic/processing-wise to my ears, but WTF do I know (not much).

I like Bare Naked Ladies (er, the BAND) Maroon musically, but the main lead singer's voice -- what'd they do to it, there's this "scrapey zing" I hear when it's played thru certain systems? I guess that's the sound of EQ'd and compressed to hell?

I also like Cake's Comfort Eagle, musically and production-wise. Their production is so dry ... it's ... different.

Generally I like anything by Ben Folds musically and Tori Amos musically and production-wise.

So these are newer CDs I like to listen to, but I can't say they knock me out for production value. There's things going on in most of the CDs I think that are creative and new, but compression and hyped highs are really a problem in general today, to me.

This isn't new, but one album I really like the sound of is Kate Bush's "The Red Shoes." Anyone else know that one?

Pipe, you are right, some of that stuff has been squashed with no mercy six days till sunday, like the APC record, I bet the meters do not move a bit if you listen through a system with meters.

How much of the compression is due to the radio though? I didn't notice overcompression last time I listened to the actual CD, though the squash is apparent when played on the air.

Or maybe my ears just aren't that good.

the radio has one squash...SUPER fast attck slooooooooooooooow release

the albums, look at em on an editor, a lot are actually SQUARE

"King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Iggy Pop"

Recorded live on July 19, 1988 at The Channel in Boston, Mass.

Beth Orton's new CD "daybreaker" is a real piece of art in both of production and songwriting. Shes got all these textural, dynamic electro-acoustic sounds going on which gives her open acoustic sound a complexity and musicality that allows you to listen again and again and again after youve gotten over the quality songwriting.

Bobby McFerrin's last CD "Beyond Words" has some of the coolest harmonic vocal phrasing ever recorded. Its also a good "how to write songs with really interesting chord changes" manual. And its dynamic, open and not squashed.

Theres also Chevelle's new "wonder whats next" for latest generation of rock thats squashed but retains lots of top end transparency. The recording quality is one step closer to the "gosh, they sound like theyre playing right here in my living room" sound.

Hot Club D'San Francisco

Not your run of the mill radio play stuff.
I don't know if this qualifys as great recordings, but the music is:D

Fantastic albums...

Depends on what you like. Here are a few:

POD-Satellite
Lifehouse-both, especially STanley Climbfall
U2-All the Things YOu Can't Leave Behind
Foo Fighters-Colour & Shape
Trust Company-
Goo Goo Dolls-Gutterflower (sadly, only a few good songs, but stellar production)

Probably my fav. production-wise: Seal- Human Beings

Dry indeed. That's what I noticed too. And I absolutely dig it. I hate it when music is drowned in reverb.
And Cake is a great band imho.

Yeah, I gotta agree with the John Mayer thing. Other recent-ish albums that I think sound great:

Trey Anastasio's solo album (not the one with Les Claypool)

Phish's Story of the Ghost

Anything Radiohead, but specifically OK Computer

Medeski Martain and Wood's Tonic. Has anybody else heard this one? It was recorded live with a single well placed sterio mic straight to two track, and it blows me away! :)

Buena Vista Social Club. This is an odd one, but I love the sound. Half of the songs almost sound like the mic was placed in a different room or something (the band can sound really distant), but I love it for some reason.

The newest thing I have is "Morning View" from Incubus. It's got excellent arrangements and a nice variety of sound and texture. "Make Yourself" is just as good.

Im trying to find as many of these as I can....thanks for al lthe replies!

Faith Hill "Breathe" great sounding album!

I just listened to Norah Jones too, nice natural sound.

I also like The Corrs "In Blue". great pop record!

Yeah, I like women in music......

Eric Johnson`s "Venus Isle" is a favorite too.....
