I just bought a new Dell PC and now I want to upgrade the soundcard to do some recording. Can someone tell me what is the difference between PCI and Firewire? I have seen these words floating around a lot and I really have no idea what they mean. Thanks!

PCI is a hardware style. It's how you connect different devices to a motherboard. Firewire is a data interface.

So you could add a Firewire port onto your computer by purchasing and installing a PCI card with Firewire ports on it.
