do floating floors help any????? are they really needed?????
i might sound dumb but are there floating walls to???

Floating floors reduce mechanical transmission of vibrations (i.e. sound) from the outside world- particularly low frequencies. One studio that I work at is right next to a road. In the office outside the studio you and *feel* a truck rumble by. In the studio with floating floors you can't- and it doesn't make it into the mic. Without the floating floor, things like doors slamming pretty much anywhere in the building can be mechanically transfered through the floor, up the stand to the mic.

It also decouples the floor from the walls, since you can't both seal and decouple the walls from the actual floor. That way your bass amp doesn't rattle the building and make it into the vocal mic in the iso booth. Or your neighbors house, for that matter.

They aren't NEEDED, but they are part of standard studio solutions to sound treatment and sound proofing.

Take care,
Chris

ok thanks for the indepth

mr. produca,

Actually you didn't get an indepth - although you did get a start.

A properly designed and constructed floating floor can do a lot of good where it's needed.

An improperly designed floated floor will not only not isolate well - but can also cause MORE problems than one had without it.

For studio construction only high mass floors have any real value - and they have to be designed for a center frequency of around 10 hZ.......

I do not have the time or the energy to go through this again here, but if you're really interested you can check out these threads:

These 2 threads are "in depth".........

Rod

A floating floor is essentially the same thing as a double stud wall with an air gap. So no, there are no floating walls. But the floor can't just hang there in midair. It has to rest on something, so neoprene pucks are used as the next best thing.
