dat? cd? something else? what is the cheapest dat recorder...maybe the cheapest external cd recorder? i'm just looking for a cheap way to mix from digital recorder, and stay digital.

It's already been shown that the cheapest way to go may be the Hi-Fi track on a decent VHS recorder. I'd agree with this for a nice VHS recorder but my SONY lo-end VHS recorder with "So-called" hi-fi audio will NOT work for this application.

I know you said, "digitally" mix down. But you also said CHEAPEST
so I included this as something to keep in mind. One of the few analog methods that will match some "digital" signals on the cheap.

If you are going to go the "tape route" (DAT), then like drstawl said, go the VHS route.

Cheap is not always the right choice
Should I buy a color TV or black and white...hhmmm...

There is hardly enough info provided to suggest much.

Is your mixing console a digital mixer or analog?

Are you using a stand alone all in one recording thing like the newer Yamaha units, or a Roland VS unit, or something like that?

Do you have a usable computer?

When I mix with an analog console, I use my computer as the mix down "deck". I like this because I can then edit, or generally manipulate the "mixes" in an editing software like Wavelab and "master" a CD on the computer. A good sound card that does 24 bit and a good CD burner for your computer can be had for as cheap as $300 (folks, before you go saying you can get this and that for this and that much, I said "GOOD" stuff....not some cheap ass SB wannabe card, and a CDR burner that actually burns good disks. Not all soundcards and CDR burners are created equal, not by a LONG SHOT!!!).

So, there are many options, but to know the "cheapest" route, I would have to know HOW you are mixing, and what kinds of outputs you have from your mixer to make any MEANINGFUL suggestions.

But these guys got their post counts up a bit...;)

This may be off topic but I'll ask anyway. Is the best computer CDRW drive pro quality. Now lets say you recorded into an outboard ad/da converter, the digital signal at around 110 -115 is going straight to the computer cdrw, would the quality compare to an outboard?

p.s
Hypothetically speaking everything in the chain is pro quality.
