What's the best way to Connect your Mics to a Patchbay

I just got me a soundcraft ghost, the 24 channel model and I'm working on gettin it all wired up.

So far I've got an insert bay hooked up, my monitor/DA bay hooked up and my AD/Direct out bay hooked up and I'm just wondering what you all think about hookin up mics to patchbays.

I have a few Pre's that I want to be able to use and I'll be getting some analog EQs soon so I was thinking of having 8 channels of the ghost hooked up to a patchbay for mic routing and then get a 16 channel stage snake for the rest. (The ghost has a Line/XLR switch so I guess it would also be possible to get a 24 channel snake too)

Now what is the best way to go about this. Would the 12 channel XLR patchbay by Hosa be the best route?

Or should I just use an average balanced bay with XLR to TRS back n forth from it?

I've never used a patchbay for this application so I was wondering what you guys think. I' really appreciate any help.

Thanks,
-Barrett

The hosa would work out fine for a straight through patch for mics to the input of the pres, then run the out's on the pres to a TRS normalled (half) second bay. Though I will say, you could build it cheaper, with better quality than that model... but then again, there aren't a lot of points of failure on a straight thru patch

How do you go about building a quality one yourself? I mean, where do you buy the supplies and materials from? If building one of these things is a first time attempt, where can you get the information or help you need to build one of these? Sounds like a fun project.
