I have a taylor 414 grand (its wonderfull). I know elixer strings last longer and sound nice but what else is there? The problem with coated strings is that I think the coating dulls the sound when using a metal slide.

the true question is not what the best strings is.....but how much you are willing to pay.....

I was sold on elixir's until I used the martin extended life. Not being an expert on how they are made, was told the diff is the elixir is dipped after it is wound, the martin before.

I've tried dozens of different strings. I've been happy lately with the Ernie Ball Earthwood, extra lights.

Strings are really personal, I think.

I have a Taylor 815C, a jumbo. It's a little twitchy, but when it's on, it's a killer. I keep going back to DR Rare Bronze, Mediums, which sometimes have intonation issues and are pretty stiff. But they wake up my guitar like nothing else can.

Try everything. Take notes. Then decide which strings make that guitar sound best. Money has nothing to do with it.

Yeah, strings are really a personal thing, and there really isn't one set "best" type. Most of my friends play on Elixers. I personally can't stand them because they cost a ton and I don't like the tone, but thats just my opinion. My main strings for two years were the D'Addario Phosphor Bronze medium gauge, and I love them. Considering I was playing out about 4-5 times per week, I started changing my strings more and more often so I needed to find something cheaper. I get my strings from stringthis.com now, and they're freakin amazing. Now, when you order from this website, they send you martin strings with no packaging, just a plastic sleave with all of the strings in them, but they also sell them to you for about $2.00 a set. Its really quite a good deal for a great set of strings. Hope that helps.

Just use a good old fashioned set of GHS strings. You can't go wrong.

Yeah... totally a personal thing.
Personally, I play rather hard on mine. When I used Earnie Ball slinky's, I was breaking strings every practice.. sucks.
So I switched to Dean Markley Blue Steel... I change 'em once every three months =)

I'm playing a Breedlove Focus, which I have had for about 6 months, and I am still in the process of trying different strings. I asked this same question on this forum and got a lot of votes for Elixir. The Elixirs are very playable, last a good while and sound nice, but when I took them off and put on DR Sunbeams (medium, which are akin to medium-light or light in most brands) the improvement in volume and overall tone was substantial. Part of that I know was that they were new strings, but I still think they are giving me more of everything. And I really don't need the slippery coating all that badly.

i wouldn't want to repeat after others.. (personal.. :))

I use martins and it sounds great for my guitar, i've just bought dean markley's and hopefully it'll sound great also...

try everything~

...GHS custom lights have worked well for me for years...but an acoustic might make me a little fussier...

my favorites (on a taylor 514) - light martin marque bronze - cheap and good. they just don't last more than a month of moderate playing, so you're gonna be changing strings a bunch.

I Like Earnie Ball Super Slinky's on my Electric Guitars and the ELIXERS on my Acoustic Guitars.

I like my D'addario's. Probably just because I've used them forever. I think it's purely a personal preference thing.

I use several different guitars (7 if you want to be more specific) and I've discovered that the strings that sound great on one will often sound like crap on another. It's not a matter of "which strings are the best," but which are the best for any particular guitar, trial and reeor is the only way to find out for sure. Even different guage sizes will make a difference even within the same brand of strings. Wish I could help you out but this is something you will just have to experiment with till you find what works the best for you.
