what’s the best portable recording system for site recording on a movie set or live recording audio in general, we are working on an independent film and we want to buy our own equipment instead of renting so we have it all for future projects, I understand that dat machines are widely used but I would rather not use one if I can get something like a mini disc or mini da recorder if the sound quality is as good and the machines are as dependable? dats are delicate and id'e rather not be carrying one around if there is something else as good that is digital but I would have no problem using one if that was the all around best way. I was thinking of trying the new motu traveler with our g4 laptop because we have cubase and digital performer and I already use the motu 828 with cubase frequently? I would like to get a digital signal right from the start if that’s a good or bad idea I would like to know what you think. What are your choices and suggestions for the top of the line and or best machine for this? I don’t know about portable recording that’s why im asking. Please try to keep the comments positive and helpful, thanks Happy holidays!
Do you want "the best" or "the best for you"? The best will cost you many arms and legs. You could easily spend $30,000 on four tracks of remote recording, with a mixer, mics, mic pres, and a recorder.
You already have some decent gear to get started. I'm not totally hip on computers, but make sure you have enough disk space to meet your needs. I'm not sure how external-drive friendly Macs are. Do you have any mics? A little research into mics for remote recording might be in order. For film, you will want to consider some kind of shotgun mic.
Here is a link to a forum about remote recording. A lot of these guys deal with high-end gear, but it makes for good reading and there is a lot of good practical advice.
Well, I'm not sure what kind of capabilities you need. But myself I use a pair of AT4053 mics, an RME QuadMic, and a Nomad Jukebox 3 when I only need two tracks. (I power the QuadMic using a Bosch Drill battery, and it runs for about six hours.) If I need more tracks I bring a laptop, an RME digiface and lots of other stuff... and it really gets quite bulky.
