What's the Best Machine for me?

Upon further reflection, it seems that the best situation for me would be 4-track, 1/4 inch, 15ips, tape recorder, but one that could also operate as a 2-track recorder--i..e. record over more tape width (as if it were a quater-inch, 2 track machine) when recording direct to 2-track. If something like that doesn't exist, can anyone recommend some 4 track, half-inch, tape recorders? XLR ins would be a nice added bonus but are not a must.

The basic idea is I want things to be very simple, but very high fidelity. My two-track Fostex A2 is okay for now, but ultimately I'd want a little more latitude, but not at the cost of fidelity. For what it's worth the music I want to record is singer songwriter stuff in the vein of old-time country/bluegrass. Think Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Stephen Foster, Hank Williams, and yours truly.

THANKS

philandon,

I am not aware of a machine that does 4 tracks on 1/4" AND 2 tracks on 1/4", except maybe by switching the headstack, which is a major ordeal. you already have an A2, why not just go for a multitrack? a 22-4 or a TSR-8 or something.

I second the vote for an 8 track multi-track like the tsr8, why limit yourself?

You guys think the TRS-8 sounds good enough? (I wish it recorded to one inch tape instead of half-inch). Do you prefer it to the Tascam 38? Any other models to look into? Also, do you know of any half-inch four track machines I might seek out?

A 1/4" 4 track at 15 ips has the same quality has a 1/2" 8 track at 15 ips.

There are no machines that can switch the track width, as this would require multiple, unique record heads. But, with your A2 and a 4 track or 8 track, you should be able to handle just about anything you would want to record, including mix downs.
