I been running my bass direct and from from a GK bass amp as an alternative. What is the rave in modelers for bass now, and average cost? I`m an old bean and don`t know whats being used lately.

Im burnt out playing key bass. I can mic the fender I have, go direct, or use the GK, but Im looking for some different sounds and don`t have the space or the neighbors to get that throaty Acoustic folded horn bass, or SVT sound without big amplitude. I`ve heard the modelers can do it inline fairly authentically.

Bass POD. Great compressor, overdrive effects, easy to use. The SVT, Eden, Gallien-Kruger, and Acoustic 360 emulations are excellent- there are 15 amp models and one preamp model. Some of the effects are good like the octave, phase shifter, and Big Muff distortion. $350. The Bass POD is one of the best investments I've ever made in my studio.
SansAmp Bass DI. $180. It's highly regarded for a DI device. They also have a version called the Bass RBI that is in rackmount form and it has more EQ control, $300.

I second the sansamp bass di, great tone!
Don't like the Basspod.. I play through an SWR rig, and the model doesn't come close. The other amps in there aren't my taste and as for the FX, I like to have more control over them and want them to be less subtle.
(unit tested for a few hours instore with amp and phones. Haven't had the opportunity to use it in studio)
BTW nothing beats my cab pumping low frequencies just behind me.

SWR makes good stuff, played it but never owned.
I have always been fond of an Acoustic 371 "W" box with an EV18 in it for "the pump". You can pressure treat hardwood with it. Now i usually use 6x10" and a Fender Showman /or GK 400 to save space and still get pressure.

if you also play guitar, try the JStation. The bass emulations are excellent (IMO), and you have all the guitar amps plus digital out and many effects, for just $150.

The bass amp and cab models in the latest J-Station firmware are very good.
As always, J-Edit is essential to get the best results.

looks like j-station is ahead by 1 rch. I`m going in to atlanta in a few days and will make it a point to check it out. I appreciate the feedback yall.

Unfortunately, you can't meaningfully check out the J-Station unless it's hooked up to a computer. The presets are ridiculous and not at all representative of what you can do with the unit.Toki987 said:

Bag one, MIDI it up to your computer, go into J-Edit and tweak until you find sounds you love, store them to files, save them to the unit, then you're cooking.
Oh, big tip: Don't be afraid to try guitar amp and cabinet models for bass and vice versa. There are a couple of fantastic-sounding bass cabinet models that sound great for guitar, too.
