i finally purchased the dr-770 drum machine, so now i need something with midi sounds like horns, strings, etc. could someone please tell me what i should get? i don't have very much money to spend, and i will be using this for hiphop production. also, i am very new to all of this. thanx a LOT!

DJ, read the Which Keyboard post by speedracer,
lots of info there.
I dont do hip hop, but I think Yamaha makes some
cheap modules that might serve you well in that field.

They also have this "machine" that I was messing with
the other day with a built in Scratch Pad, not
my style but it was fun as hell!!

Yahama also has a keyboard, I think its called
CSX1, that has been replaced by CSX2 of course,
and I have seen em on the net for like $330
new. They are Tailored for the hip hop crowd,
and have 6 controller knobs on there for
analog-type effects, so maybe that might be
something to check out too. David

For a cheep keyboard try the djx its made for Rap,hip hop(ect)I loved using it with my MPC 2000,until I layed hands on my friends ASR-X then it kind of sucked.Im not sure about the DJX2(the new one)I havent tryed it because I dont mess with those kinds od keys anymore.

I understand that your money is low but it might help in the long run if you look for a workstation now.Like a Tirton,trinity.asr-10,xp-80(60,50)Ext.Because you will find your self looking for a better sequencer and better, more sounds messin with those cheep keyboards.

Im just gonna end this saying "The only thing I use my DJX for is my midi controler".I hope this helps.

so do i just need to buy a keyboard? or do i need a sequencer also? are there any keyboards (for cheap) that have sequencers in them?

thanx a lot

The Djx,well i wouldnt call it a sequencer I would call it a recorder. But im pretty sure your drum machine has a little sequencer than with midi you can go further but i dont think the dr has many tracks. If you wanna get further into it post up your question or hit me on the e-mail.

DJ Chronic,

I'm not sure what your budget is. But if you're doing strictly hip hop, you may want to check out the Korg Electribe series. There are three the Electribe-A, an analog modeling synth, the Electribe-R, a rhythm synth, and the Electribe-S, a sampler. They all include an octave-long pad to play the sounds (or beat the drum kits). The Electribes A and R are about $400. I think the Electribe-S is $100 more at $500. I checked these boxes out in the music store and for the price, they did some really amazing, wacked-out stuff that would go really well with a hip-hop and other beat-oriented production.

You spoke of horns and strings for your productions. Those needs sound like a more traditional sound box. If that's the case, and you really want a good all-around box with great "traditional" sounds (piano, electric piano, strings, guitar, horns, etc...), then I suggest looking into the Roland JV 1010. It's a wonderful box for high quality all-around sounds and it goes for about $450 (if you shop around, you could get it for $399 - $425). The sounds are not really "dirty", which is usually a plus for hip-hop, but you can "dirty" 'em up while recording.

P.S. the Korg Electribes have a built-in sequencer.

yeah i have the 1010 and now im wishing I would of got the 2080 now later in life I have to spend money on a 2080 or 1080 instead of a different module.

The JV-1080 that I use, I use it and Dance, Techno, Hip-Hop, Bass and drums expansion boards

The stuff I've done is incredible. The 1080 and my S2800 are my center pieces
