What's my snare?

I bought a 3"x14" Pearl piccolo snare used. It has the snare sound I've dreamt of since first hearing Helmet's "Betty" cd (some 12 years ago). It has MasterCast free-floating hardware and has a maple shell. Made in Taiwan, serial number of 222682. Can anyone tell me what exactly this drum is called? I can't seem to find any of the Master Series that are 3x14, but all the sizes i DO find have model numbers. I was just curious as to what this one might be... :confused:
 
Are you 100% sure that it is not actually 14" x 3.5"??? Pearl made several series of Piccolos that were 3.5" deep.
 
it's certainly possible. i didn't actually take off the hardware to measure, just measured by best guess based on where the rings "spread". on pearl's website the most shallow master series they show is 4"...and there's no way i'm off by a full inch. what do you think?
 
It sounds like you got yourself a great Pearl free floater with maple shell!
The mastercast hoops were used on other various snares even if they're not actually from the Masters series drums.

That pic is pretty close. The name plate on mine doesn't actually say "free floating snare" on in, just "Pearl, maple shell," and the serial. I'm having trouble with the attachment thingy. If it worked, then here it is...

I believe you do have to include the basket as part of the measurement.

So if it's a 3" wooden snare, and the basket is 1 inch extra in depth, they probably sell it as a 4" deep drum.

I have an 8"x14" brass Free floating snare by Pearl, but I don't think the metal shell is actually 8" deep - I think it's only 7" deep with probably 1" added on from the basket.

Looks lovely whatever it is. Does it matter what model it is? All that should matter is the sound. If you can, get it recorded!!! I wanna hear :D

No, it doesn't especially matter--i don't plan on listing it on ebay anytime soon (when you spend more than a decade searching for the perfect drum, you don't really look to get rid of it anytime soon :D )

And I have plenty recorded--but since I record on a standalone unit (akai dps12), I have to burn everything to cd before putting on the computer (no scsi on my pc), and usually I only rip the full mixes from cd to the computer. I've been thinking of recording just some drum tracks and getting those on the computer, but it'll probably be awhile. Thanks for the props, though. It does indeed sound ridiculously tight. Samples pending...
