Whats my next best purchase (Volume 2)

Ok, so 1 more thing.

If the mixer is out of the equation, where do my headphones get plugged in at when I am singing?

It really depends on what you're doing in your studio. The new hot thing in audio interfaces is firewire. M-Audio makes some good ones like the Firewire 410 and 1814. If you're considering doing some real audio recording and midi production, you may want to get pro tools, which goes for around $250 w/o the interface. It all really depends on what you need to accomplish and what limitations your current gear is placing on your work.

Good Luck!

Ok, so it looks like I will be getting the MAudio Delta 1010 with the break out box. So if I get the Tampa the chain would be liek you described above:

Mic >> Tampa >> Delta >> Software >> Delta Outs >> Monitors

My questions is the same as above. If I am recording vocals, where do my headphones come into play so I can listen to the musaic as I am singing? Does the board now come back into the mix or does the headphones go where the monitors would be coming out from the Delta outs? Would I have to just keep switching them back n forth?

Thanks

You would need your mixer yet, delta outs to line ins on the mixer, then control room outs on the mixer to the monitors. Then of course you would plug your headphones into your mixers headphone out. I personaly use a beringer mini-mon for my monitors and headphone send to a headphone amp in my tracking rooms. But your mixer can perform the same duties.

And if you are wondering, no, none of the delta cards have headphone outs.

So the chain would be something like this:

Source >> Mic >> Tampa Ins and then Digital Outs >> Delta Ins >> Recording Software >> Delta Outs >> Mixer >> Monitors / Headphones ??

Also, if this IS the correct chain, since the behringer mixer has the IMPs (Invisible Mic Pres), they wont like "over-ride" or anyway affect the Tampa's pres will it?

Thanks

Tough to argue with free. :)

The 1010 should do you just fine.

I think you're well on your way but I'd think about upgrading your board too. If nothing else, it will simply make your monitoring a better reflection of what was actually recorded. I just upgraded from a Behringer board to a Yamaha MG series and the difference is pretty darn apparent. Not only are the preamps less noisy and warmer, the overall increase in quality was surprising. Mixes that I was struggling to get decent volume on without distorting are a breeze after this upgrade, with plenty of headroom to spare.

Yea, I will eventually upgrade the board for sure. Its a $50 special that was my first purchase on this venture :)

However, the board preamps dont even come into play with the way my chain is set up right?

It goes: Mic >> Tampa IN >> Tampa 1/4" balanced out >> Delta IN >> Delta Out >> Channel 3/4 of Mixer

Then from the mixer I have the headphones plugged in for when I am tracking and the monitors going out of MAIN OUT for when I am mixing. Although I wasn't sure if to put them from MAIN OUT or CTRL ROOM OUT. On the same note, the only way I have figured out how to separate the headphones and the monitors is to turn the monitors off completely while I am tracking and then back on when I am mixing.

Here is a close up of my board.

Thanks again for the replies.
