I voted for myself. I've got some decent equipment, but not enough time to play with it...

hah

hhhaahaha

hahahahahaha

...he did it with tape recorders. He isn't that far back in ancient history

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_multitrack_recording

I know, I know, its wikipedia, but from the books and articles I've read on the topic, its fairly accurate.

From Wikipedia:
"These recordings were made with wax discs; Paul would record a track onto a disc, and then record himself playing another part with the first."

I saw a documentary on him and he said the same thing. It wasn't true multitracking, but it was the first time someone had recorded overdubs in this fashion. It wasn't until he got the Ampex 200 that he truely "invented multi-track".

I'd say nothing, and what I have isn't exactly awesome. Pretty low level even for this forum...but I'm probably not aiming my arrow at the same target as most people. All my favorite sounding records are...well, I really like Tom Waits and Songs: Ohia records....so I'd rather cut a record in my garage and fuck it up a little bit than go for any kind of precision.

I'd say my room. My equipment is OK, my abilities are getting better every day.
My room is small, it has no treatment. Luckily I have no real trouble with frequencies, but it's the size and the way I can use my room(like setting up my stuff).

check out ebay...really cheap treatment can be found there. I got some bass traps and foam squares, with the same specs as auralex for a song on there.

It's definately me!

IMO, to have a great recording, you need a great performance, ability to really capture the performance, and the knowledge to bring everything together in the end. Great performance and me don't know each other....and I pretty much guess at everything afterwards.

i wish i could vote "all of the above"...they are ALL a weak point for me. hahahaha

i'm using a $10 desktop mic i bought at k-mart with the infamous panty-hose-and-coat-hanger pop filter, and i'm using sony headphones i bought there as well for "monitors".

but i must say, my abilities are really coming along...i seriously learn something new every day...and i've been able to scrape up enough money in between student loan payments to think about buying real mics for once. i think at $200, i may buy this...at that price, you buy the interface and get 2 MXL mics, 2 cables, and a case for $50. a bargain if you ask me.

hahahahaha oh god "my limiter"...i should've seen that coming.

hardy har har.

ROFLcopter!! Haha!!

I thought it was something my friend made up when I told him a joke the other week and he said, "not bad, but it's hardly gonna pay for my ticket to fly on the ROFLcopter"!

My room. and monitors at this point... and of course - inexperience.
It is realy hard if I hear how all my band should sound and try to record demo for new songs or just ideas, with no live drums. I could play all instruments in band (of course not like a pro, but for demo, so I could send to my bandmates some new to discuss or learn)
But wih no live drums I jmus use just drum loops wich I persoaly hate because of no life in them but sometimes it could be useful, when building some idea and need some drums fast to listen how it could sound in the middle of creative process, and building drum loops that I like takes time, but ideas dont stay long in head.. thay could dissapear in minutes. so I would be happy if I had live drums, because all other instruments I have and can play basic or little more on them to build my ideas. I like to make almost complete sound of what I am expecting from band members to play, but thay just need put their knoledge of instrument in his parts and make correctionjs or improvements if he wants.
So my answer was room, because I have no space for live drums at this moment... and I would like to answer "knoledge", because if you thhink that you know everything, then you are biggest fool.

my laptop isn't powerful enough to handle the metal.
so im saving up to buy a really badass desktop. then i will dominate.

Previously, it was that my studio was a disorganized mess.

Now, it's just lack of time to devote to my hobby.;)

Just a quick reply on this one..
I'm a drummer that writes a bit too and don't usually have the kit setup at home to record ideas but so as not to lose the feel of stuff, I never use pre-programmed drum loops. Just lay down a quick bit of midi kick and snare on a keyboard plugin. and get your ideas down. that's my method anyway so just thouight I'd share..

As soon as you start hunting through loops and hour is gone and so is the vibe/idea.

I voted for room cause its totally untreated and small and I would love to kit it out to a decent spec to see how much better i could get my stuff to sound!, also i'd nod towards talent cause hopefully I'm still getting better as a musician / producer / engineer as i record and keep learning more as time goes on.

More free time would be great aswell:)

My talent! oh and my room acoustics, mics, preamps, and cabling!

I need better and longer mic cables, more patch cables for routing, a few more mics to choose from, better preamps, and did I mention better and longer mic cables? :)
