I'm wondering, what does everyone have on their kit? What hardware, cymbals etc and how is it set up?

I have a Remo Quadura 5-peice. I play a four peice and I've thought about about mounting the the 2nd tom from the Ride stand. I have paiste 402 silver hats, Alpaha series crash, Sabian Plus Ride (old - it has the BEST sound) and a middle of the line Dixon double kick pedal.

I hope to get a China and a new set of Crashes

what about everyone else??

Tim

let me look at my drum set, i feel like such a mark, thats about it.

Drums of Doom!

Okay you asked for it!

After going through literally a dozen+ drumkits searching for "my sound", I wound up Custom building a set myself.
I used Keller Shells, and Lugs and parts I got from Andy Foote at Drum Supply House.

The Kit is finished in a Satin-Oil Natural hand-rubbed Finish. Looks and sounds incredible!
The Toms are 8-ply Maple. The Kicks are 10-Ply Maple.

The Kick drums have AKG D112's Mounted Internally on MAYEA Mic Mounts, and Hart Triggers mounted inside the Shells on an "L" bracket-which presses them against the Batter Head from the inside. Trigger used to Open The Key on Noise Gates.

The Snare has a Hart Trigger permanently Mounted inside for Controlling the Key on a Noise Gate.

Toms have Remo Muff'ls on them.
Kicks have a King Size Pillow in each.
Snare is "wide-open".

This is going to be a long list.
Depth x Diameter

2 16" x 28" Kicks (Yes, that is twenty-eight, not a typo)
1 16" x 20" Floor
1 14" x 18" Floor
1 12" x 15" Mounted between Kicks.
1 8" x 14" Brass Pearl "FFS" (Free Floating Snare.)

All Toms have Pinstripe Batters with Ambassador Resonant Heads.
Kicks have CS BlackDots(White Heads with Black Dots) on Batter and FibreSkyn 3's on the Resonant side-No holes in Resonant heads.
The Snare has a Coated Pinstripe on Top, and Remo Snare head on the Bottom.

All stands are Pearl's Top of The Line.
Kick pedals and hi-Hat stand are "Axis Longboards"-Legs are removed from Hi-Hat stand. Mounted to Kick with a Pearl Hi-Hat mount.

Sticks are Vic Firth "Buddy Rich" model. (My Favorite for the last few years)

All Cymbals are Paiste

1 14" set of 2002 Sound-edge Hi-hats
1 22" Rude Power Ride (had it since 1981 or so)
1 20" 2002 China Type
1 20" Sound Formula Full Crash
1 19" 2002 Medium
1 18" 2002 Medium
1 18" Sound Formula Power Crash

The following Cymbals are mounted on 1 Pearl Boom Cymbal Stand which has a Mounting Bar that I made from 1" Square Steel Tubing, with 5/16" threaded Bolts serving as the Cymbal posts.(You can buy a 3 foot section of 5/16" Threded steel, which I simply cut into pieces with a Demel Mototool.

1 3" Accent Cymbal
1 5" Accent Cymbal
1 6" Accent Cymnal
1 5" Cup Chime
1 7" Cup Chime
1 8" 2002 Bell

The Following are triggering sounds from an Akai S2000s/e Sampler; I'm using an Alesis DM5 for the TMI.

3 ddrum Pads (Triggering Tympani samples)
5 triggers that I built (like LP spikes) (Triggering Symphonic Chimes/Tubular Bells)

My Next step, is building a Stage, and threading the Bottoms of my Cymbal Stands, so that they will no longer be "tripods", but will thread into metal "Sockets" in the Deck of the Drum Riser, thereby allowing me to take up less space with the Drumkit.
Sort of Like Neil Peart's Kit is mounted to his Riser.

Re: set up

Hi Gregg,

How do you like the 28" kick?

After I finally got to play on one-I decided That was one of the things that had been missing in my playing.
I'm 32 and I've been playing since I was about 8.

The Purecusion Shells are the same ones that I made my kit from-Keller makes them; essentially Keller makes all of the quality maple Shells in the US (including DW, the modern Slingerland, and Gretsch shells.

I liked the Purecussion's when they came out-but they had this "spandex" type of covering on them at that time, and I was after either a Chrome Finish or a Woodgrain Finish.

Originally, I was going to have the shells made from Stainless Steel, but that put the kit just a hair out of my price range (it was $500 more than I intended to spend. I probably should have done it anyway....)

I used to collect old snares, and my Favorite was a 1947 Leedy. The Shell finally cracked; living in Florida I guess the Humidity and Heat were too much for it; I bought the thing at a garage sale for $40 with a 14" Zildjian Cymbal included! hahaha
The Cymbal looked like it had been a 22" or so, and had been cut down; it sounded like CRAP! Worked for an oddball ride, but that was it.

How do you like The Sennheiser's mounted inside? What about the ATM?

I'm wanting to go MAYEA with the rest of my Drums; I already did the Kicks, and they sound awesome!! It allowed me to go with a FULL front head on the kick, which I love.

Tim

FYI

Since drum shells are basically plies of wood glued and pressed together, most drum companies buy their shells from 3 large distributors:

- Keller
- Jasper
- Eames

1-) In my knowledge, Gretsch uses Jasper shells
2-) DW recently started manufacturing their own shells (used to use Keller)
3-) Pearl, Yamaha, Ludwig, Slingerland and some other brands manufacture their own shells
4-) Most custom drum companies like GMS, OCDP, Pork Pie, etc. buy their shells from Keller (with the specific qualities they want like age, grain etc.)

Keller and Eames are the only companies selling their shells to the public. Since Eames only sells Birch shells, they are kind of expensive. But basically anyone can get shells from Keller, along with some hardware and build themselves a great sounding maple kit.

Just for your information...

big bass drum

hi tim nice to hear from you. I used to live in florida too around 80 to 83. I'm 39 and have been playing since age ten.The big bass drum was kind of a novelty. It sounds good though but I just don't get the response like I do from a 22. The MAY/EA system is fantastic! I've been using them since 87. I acually got to talk with Randy May about some parts I needed and he signed me on as an endorser! the mics work great for live although they are kind of wierd for studio stuff. I've run into all kinds of engineers all over and always bring up the subject of internal mics. Most engineers don't like them. I did just do an album here in cleveland and we got great results with the internal mics. I also have my drums set up in my home studio and just plug right in. I don't seem to have much of a problem getting good drum sounds. I bet you get alot of stange looks when people see 28 bass drums. I'll give you some history on my big set. It's acually one half of a large double bass set that belonged to some rock and rool god from the seventies I think it might have been ansly dunbar or someone. they sat in a used music store window for years just as a showpiece really. My brother and his buddy went in on the set and simply split it in two.
