Yamaha Pacifica.....

also Peavey makes nice guitars in that range......

I have to echo Gidge on this since I own both. I have a Yamaha Pacifica which is shaped like a tele. It has a cherry sunburst finish. It is a very solid, great playing guitar. I replaced the pups with Seymours and I gig with it often. Very solid. Also, after reading some very good comments, I scored a Peavey Predator off of ebay for $50.00. It is a strat copy that is built like a tank. Sounds amazingly good for a $50.00 axe. Dont be fooled, this axe is not made anymore. Peavey still markets an axe called "Predator" but it is not the same. Mine is a made in USA strat style from the early '90s. The ones they make now look more like a metal axe with locking wang bar and stuff.

used peavey T-15, will go around $100 and it beats my mexican strat.

all of the reviews that I see about the made in USA Peavey axes always say that they are better than the MIM Strats.

Get a Made in Mexico Telecaster. (Used?? I don't know USA prices.) As is, it's good. If you want to upgrade it later, you can add pickups. saddles, and pots, and have something more-or-less as good as a USA Tele. HOWEVER, try a few and make sure you get a good one, a good piece of wood with a good neck and decent sound. If you don't know your way around, get someone who does to help you. The value is good, and it's upgradeable with a wide selection of pickups and other after-market parts. I think that the MIM Tele is a better Tele that the MIM Strat is a Strat.
