What's a D.I ?

D.I stands for Direct In, which is when you plug a guitar or bass straight into a console/computer/whatever and play through an amp simulator instead of micing an amp.
 
Others say it stands for Direct Input, Direct Injection, etc... It's used more on bass than guitar generally.
 
You can do that.

Fom what I understand unless you buy a good quality DI it won't do much for you. The cheap ones pull out a little bit of electric noise, but not enough to where it makes it worth your time/effort/money.

If you're gonna use a DI box then buy a really good one. Otherwise, just deal with it.
 
The DI makes it safe to run an instrument signal into another machine. Most come with add ons like sims, ground loop cancel, pads, balancing signal etc. Almost all decent effects units will do the same thing + more BUT NOT effects pedals unless they state otherwise as they usuall UP the signal, noise etc etc. Folk use a DI often to get the sound of their guitar/bass without the colouration of an amp & speakers or where the use of amp/speakers makes mic recording difficult.
The best analogy I can think of is that it is the difference between plugging the line out of a CD player into the line in of an good stereo. The levels are correct for the stereo to work with.
 
di has alreayd been explained, but the only thing noone noticed was that it [from the one's ive looked at] act as a 4 speaker cab. it mean direct in, and its used to plug straight in, and the guy above was right about the signals and everything.

unless you have a GOOD nice di i wouldnt even use it. mic'ing is much better
