Line 6 is making(or has made?) a valve amp. Yep, the modeling people made a tube amp..with the help of bogner. Its called Line 6 Spider Valve. I havent seen it on any musician friend places or anything...its interesting/scary at the same time...Heres the link:

http://line6.com/spidervalve/index.html

If you already know, or this was already discussed, then sorry to bring it up again..but thought people would like to know.

that is scary.

but atleast it says something good about the market. even idiot kids who are buying line 6 are starting to notice the benefits of tube amplification!

Damnit! Now what am I supposed to use as an excuse to not like Line6?

I've been watching this saga unfold for the last month or so on the L6 forum. To be honest it's a bit of a cop out if you ask me. I mean if Line 6 models are so good then why would they need valves?

I used to be a POD user and I still have a UX1 Toneport but the recent Line 6 releases have me somewhat baffled. And then there's the forthcoming POD X3 which I really don't get

They dont need valves...their trying to expand to guitarists that are diehard tube users...and its for people to run their pod/pedalboards through. They wanna somehow cover the amp market. And for being tube amps that do as much as they do, their fairly cheap. The 112 is 700, the head is 800, the cab(with V30's) is 700, and the 212 i think is 900. For a 4x12 cab with V30s, thats a pretty good price. I like the spider/flextone amps already, the tube addition is just a cool thing...and the amps look pretty nice too...but its not about the looks.

From the Line 6 site:

MSRPs for the Spider Valve 112, Spider Valve 212 and Spider Valve HD100 will be $969.99, $1159.99, and $1099.99, respectively.

Seems pretty steep to me but I'm not a Line 6 fan anyway...
Plus you've got the issue that their stuff isn't all that reliable in the first place. Add in tube circuitry and OT, I think there's a disaster waiting to happen for tons of people.

The MSRP is not the price the stuff is actually sold at..i looked it up at zzsounds...699 for the 112, 829/839 for the 212, 699 for the V30 Cab, and 799 for the HD100.

I know this is an old subject, but I'm putting my .02 on it.

But before I do, do any of you guys own one yet, or have heard it/played it in person?

Ok, now for the cheese.

As far as it being a cop out, I think that's a little unfair. The folks at Line 6 are good at marketting. They have never outright lied about a product as far as I can tell.. Saying that, they also knew (and everyone else knows), the versatility and flexibility of their products are pretty fucking killer. Sure, Line6 stuff leads a bit to be desired by a tube purists, however, you can make their shit sound AWESOME if you know what you are doing (this is the kicker). I'm working on a record that all the guitars were recorded with a Flextone III with the exception of a tracks and you would be hard pressed to think "eh, modeling". It sound like the "L6" tone, but it sounds GOOD.

Also, the SpiderValve stuff was designed by Rienhold Bogner, so I doubt that the quality end of the deal will suffer much (unless Line 6 skimps on the construction). It was engineered to be a tube amp without being a white-paper tube amp.

I personally think it's a killer concept and from the audio i've heard (albeit low quality) it's DAMN impressive. So to the point of my wanting to try it out and come up with the money to buy the head version.

Anyone wanna peep in?

Oh i love the flextone III..i am debating about getting it or a peavey valveking/b-52. and i was excited about the valve, and have listened to some samples of it off youtube etc. However, i went to the line 6 message board, and some die hard line 6 people said the amp was a little under expectation.

You want the God's honest truth from someone who used it extensively? If you do it's gonna hurt....a lot. I waited and waited for this amp to come out, just knowing it was going to be theeeee shit. However after cranking it on, letting it warm up and tweaking with it for endless hours it is my very honest opinion that this amp is just a Spider III with some tubes thrown in. Not that the tubes don't do anything, they do, but it doesn't sound a God Damned thing like a Bogner in any way shape or form. It sounds like a Line 6, which isn't always unusable, but many amps in the similar price range can sound much better. I'd rather have a ValveKing, a Windsor, a B52, or even a Valve Jr. with some effects pedals. All that being said, for some strange reason, the amp slut in me still wants one. I'm the type that likes cool trendy toys, had I been old enough and had enough money at the time I probably would've bought a DeLorean when they came out eventhough they were huge pieces of shit.

I agree 100%. If you like the harsh and shrill digital tone of Spider amps then you will love the Spider Valve. It sounds exactly like a solid state amp. In a blind test I doubt anyone could tell the difference between the Spider II and the Spider Valve. Line 6 had a good idea but they screwed up somewhere in the design. I was really hoping that it would sound better.

These days, just about anyone can make a solid state amp that sounds like a tube amp, but make a tube amp that sounds like a solid state one, well, they've got a corner on that market!* ;^)

*I've never heard one.

You know what though, id like to do a blind test of a Pod/any other Line 6 modeler versus a mic'd up tube amp...i wanna know how many "pros/people that say there is a huge difference" can tell which is which, and how many average player/person that understands somewhat of a difference between the tube/modeling thing can tell..aka someone like me. I'd bet the results would be different from what everyone would expect. Ive heard some amazing tones out of line 6 amps, but i will agree the valve is a minor let down. To some, it is greatness, but to most, its just a spider with tubes.

How about two cents from a newb? ;)

My first big amp, and still have it, is a cruddy solid state marshall.

A couple years later, I played on one of these line 6's, and thought it sounded terrible. Screwing with it forever, and no matter what I do.... it sounds so 'thin'. Like you're playing guitar with a fricking keyboard.

Then, later on I tried out one of those Blue Voodoo amps that were all the craze. Yeah... that lasted all of 5 minutes. "Junk"

I've NEVER been able to play on an all tube amp, and NEVER have even heard one up close... but from where I'm standing with what I've got and what I've heard so far.... there seems to be no doubt in my mind that I need a tube amp.

Side note - If you REALLY want all tube modeling, get the real thing - Mesa Roadking

Edit -

I just seen this at the bottom of the page, hahahahha-

"What would you rather play …a cyber mock-up? Or a fleet of real, hand-made, all-tube amps. The Road King™ is the new frontier, in authentic tube tone.
King Kontroller Footswitch"

True...however, im 16..and im not gonna be a rockstar anytime soon, when that day comes i'll get my "perfect" tone. Right now, modelers(that come close enough for me)..will do..such as the Flextone III or HD147, or the Pod.

Actually, weren't the members of Metallica only like 17 or 18 when they landed big?

As is the story with MANY other bands.

There's an old saying.... 'Youth is wasted on the young'.

I wish I was sixteen again..... Get out there and kick some ass buddy!!!
