What would you reckon as the best rock-riff ever?

  • Thread starter Thread starter Speeddemon
  • Start date Start date
voodo chile (slight return).....stevie ray rehashed it and pearl jam beat it to death on an "original" of theirs

smoke on the water.....i think my grandma can even hum that one

Freebird....does a rock riff get any better than that?

i agree on Aerosmith...but their best rock riffs are some of the more obscure tunes like "get the lead out" "back in the saddle"
"same old song and dance" "woman of the world"

but i do agree that "love in an elevator" has one of the best intros of all time.

Great balls of fire.....thats a great timeless rock riff

"tush" by zz top

the kinks "you really got me"

someone mentioned "smells like teen spirit" thats a rip-off of bostons "more than a feeling" riff (acording to kurt cobain...he said he couldn't get it quite the same as boston...so it IS a little bit different)

too many to list really...i don't think there is any "one best riff"

but if i had to pick one it would probably be "whole lotta love"
lol

Van Halen... Jump....

Great Keys... Tell me someone 5-90 years old, who can't Identify that intro......

Here's my top ten list:

10: Back in Black
9: La Grange
8: Crazy Train
7: Misty Mountain Hop
6: Money for Nothing
5: Dance the Night Away
4: Mississippi Queen
3: Little Guitars
2: Ain't Talkin' Bout Love

And finally............

drumroll please.............

1: Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

dont get me wrong. i really do like godsmack. no techno, rap, or pop...just very heavy rock. I like them alot.
Obviously the guitar stuff is radically different, AIC is more classical and complex, but the singing is veerryy similar.
Still both bands are good in my eyes/

Normally I would condemn a band like Godsmack.. But here I make an exception for the following reasons:

1. The band has openly stated that they started as an AIC cover band. They honestly revel in their admiration for AIC (compared to the hundreds of rip-offs that towed to the "Pearl Jam" line for radio play-including Pearl Jam themselves).

2. When you get down to it, the guitars don't sound like Jerry Cantrell.

3. AIC burnt itself out completely after Dirt (an album which I personally feel pales in comparison to both Facelift and Sap). .. Consequently, this same weenie-down approach to album follow-up was repeated by Stone Temple Pilots.. I am still pissed at these idiots for taking a promising genre to limp wristed stupidity.. (I think Soundgarden was the only group that left the scene with it's musical dignity intact) . I am very thankful that Sully and Co. understood and was there to pick up the pieces..

4. They may be AIC-ish, but at least they are talented players and songwriters..

Damn, I really hate Jump from Van Halen. I get seizures think of it.

Anytihing from Rage does it to me. Who can deny the power behind a riff like Bombtrack
Oh yeah, never forget Here Comes Your MAn
Or Paranoid from Black Sabbath

'Iron Maiden' - IRON MAIDEN (the middle bass riff, get ready, here comes Eddie!)

I'll hafta disagree on Jump. Panama has better chunk.. So does Hot for Teacher, but La Grange has already been mentioned.

Wow

I scrolled through this thread and I am kinda shocked that no one even mentioned Eric Clapton.... geez maybe it's just because he's a legend? I don't know but I learned more about guitar playing from him than anyone. Speaking of Rock & Roll and riffs, What about Alvin Lee at Woodstock? Now that's rock and roll!!!

Layla - Derek and the Dominoes

I believe he was also the Derek in Derek and the Dominoes...

Just FYI dude..:D

I still say Reelin' in the Years though:D

OK........

Off the top of my head.

Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak (disappointed no one picked this one...I could play it for hours!!!)
Spoon - Metal Detektor
Spoon - Anything you want
Paul Westerberg - Waiting for somebody
Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Bowie - Sufferagette City
Fugazi - Waiting room
The Pixies - Debaser
Springsteen - Born To Run
Springsteen - Prove It All Night
Springsteen - Badlands
Sprindsteen - Brilliant Disguise

I know there's more but I can't think at the moment.

Yeah, Walsh had some great ones. Rocky Mount, Funk 49, Walk Away.

Also, kudos to Jack Hammer for his second post.

i started to list "la grange" but its actually a john lee hooker riff and i couldn't think of the name of the tune

Not my favorite but..........

Runnin' down a dream- Tom Petty

That opening riff has road tune written all over it.

Oooooh, there's a great topic!

My pick for best album to drive to:

Flying in a Blue Dream - Satriani

Hands Down!! Top down, one hand on the wheel, crankin' "Can't Slow Down" and "Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing". Sheer nirvana.
A close second would be Van Halen "1984"

Here's a few not mentioned so far....

Native Stepson - Sonny Landrith
Lenny or Riviera Paradise - SRV
Rightous - Eric Johnson (or anything by EJ for that matter)
Little Wing - Jimi (EJ and SRV do killer verions as well)
Baker Street - Gerry Raferty (ok, so it's sax, but it's still a cool riff)
Can't You Hear me Knockin' - Stones
Gimme Shelter - 'Stones

Hell, I could be here all day and I haven't even gotten out of the late 80's!!!!

Okay...best album to drive to, drum roll please.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Jamiriquai: Emergency on Planet Earth or is it................................Electric Ladyland-Jimi.
