Do they share the same pre's?

And here's another somewhat on-topic question: does anybody know from where the pre's in my MX-80 rackmount 8-channel preamp are derived? 200-series? 300-series? 500-series? None of the above?
No problem. IF I recall correctly, the 300 series preceeded the 500 series by about a year. The MX-80, I believe, came out slightly before the 300 series. IF my memory is correct, I would say that the 500 series has the better pre-amps. I haven't, though, done an actual hearing test between the two. I did do a lot of work with the 500 series and spec'ed a few on some installations and was generally impressed. I also installed my share of MX-80's.

Hey man,...

you have all the greatest gear!;)

The MX-80...

The MX-80 was marketed concurrently with the Series 200, 300 and 500, so it's anyone's guess. However, the feature set is most loaded and similar to the 500 Series, which does't speak to the internal components necessarily, but on looks alone it's most like the 500's.;)

How about this?

Should I run away?

Richard, thanks for the background...I started wondering when I saw the pad selectors on the 500 console and they are identical to my MX-80...

you have all the greatest gear
Reel, you crack me up!

I think problem is that I've spent too much of the past year being a gear-collector and not as much a gear user. :)

I got that MX-80 for $35 plus S&H. It needed cleaning up, and channel 7 doesn't make it through to the summing buss, but other than that it works great and cleaned up pretty good.

Also have an RS-20B in 9 out of10 condition that I picked up for $80.

Should I run away?
I don't know about this one for you. The problem is that it will have to be shipped all the way across the country and you never know what might happen to it, although I have had tape machines shipped cross country with no problems. The price is right.

Here's one I am thinking about since it is just 35 miles away. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300222165001&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020 I don't need it at all, but it might be interesting to play with. The high bid is only $1.00 as of now. If I could get it for $10 or so I just might make the move. I'm going to watch and see what happens with it. Don't anyone else bid on this. ;)

snipped from here: http://www.instrumentpro.com/C-TAS-HISTORY-2?PHPSESSID=bb3774db179dcb17f912e45cf2d07380 This whole site is a great read and should be required reading. :D
1984...TASCAM introduced the M-512 and M-520 audio production mixing consoles. These were TASCAM's first cost-effective balanced consoles. They came in two input configurations...12 x 8 and 20 x 8. These were priced starting at $3,995 suggested retail.- The TASCAM 40 series included the 42-NB 1/4" 2-track 2 channel half track mastering and broadcast on-air recorder/reproducer, the 44-OB 1/4" 4-track recorder/reproducer with 10 1/2" reels and 15 IPS, and the 48-OB 1/2" 8 track 8 channel recorder/reproducer with SMPTE interlock capability.- The TASCAM 300 series mixers consisted of the M-308 a (8 x 4 x 8), the M-312 a (12 x 4 x 8), and the M-320 a (20 x 4 x 8) mixer.-
Anyway, it appears that the 300 and 500 series came out at about the same time. 1984 was a good year.

MAN I'm struggling with this...!

The seller got back to me with some pictures of the back and confirmation that the console left its former home (the radio station) sans power supply. Though it was a recent surprise. Haven't heard from the radio station yet...hoping to talk to somebody that's been there and knows the history. They apparently donated the board to an equipment mover that was moving inthe upgrade equipment that was decommissioning the M520. The mover had mentioned a friend that was starting another radio station and so the owner at the time offered to donate the board if the mover could take care of the handling, so the intention was for a working board to be donated...urg! The mover had it in storage until the new radio station opened up a month ago. They pulled it out of storage realizing at that point that there was no power supply. They were apparantly surprised...expected to have a working board, but why *they* wouldn't have contacted the former owner I don't know.

The back looks really clean...jumpers are there...

URG!!

I'm setting the stage to make a really low-ball offer and see what happens. I must be stoopid. :( GAH!!!

Richard, I saw that M308 too. I'd be tempted if I already had one...great for parts at least, but I don't, and you've got dibs! :p

Thanks too for the Tascam historical info...I seem to recall reading that somewhere...I think Tascam used to have that up on their site before the redesign. It is indeed a nice summary.

So much for heeding the sound advice...

I offered $50...:confused::rolleyes::o

Someone stole it from me for $18.50. If I find him I'll kill him. ;)

Richard...very, very sad. It should have been yours, man.

I, however, have benevolently avenged your defeat...while you were unjustly cheated out a dead mixing board, I am now the proud owner of a dead mixing board...$50....I'm...nuts.

If you can all do me a favor and...ah...keep your eyes peeled for a power supply for my...uh...big dead board...hm...

Cory, I support your decision all the way. I too would have wanted to work out a deal on the said board so congratulations. The best that could happen is that you find the proper power supply or perhaps even get one made, one way or another [maybe on the cheap], someday soon and have a totally working mixer, all for, what amounts to a mere fraction of what it cost originally. Worse case scenario, you have enough 'good' parts in there to reverse the cost you put in it, if it doesn't work. It's really no risk to you, especially for a board that cost a lot of money back in the day.

BTW, does anyone know the model number of the power supply so that we can all be on the lookout?

Lets hook Cory up!:D;)
