What would I need?

It is definately something that interests me, but they all seem to be all-in-one stuff. I know I'm picky but I would like to add external compressors and preamps and not have them built in. In other words I guess I just want something that have 8 tracks and a record function with the money going into quality of the interface instead of digital effects, compressors and drum machines. They all seem so overly user-friendly and that makes me suspicious about what I am actually paying for.

Am I making any sense at all?

Ah i understand, You're not using a pc at all.

By the way I am using a PC for distributing recorded songs but I prefer hardware. And here's a sample:

The drums are programmed on my PC and loaded into the loop station.

Yeah it's by far the best drum machine I've ever tried! :)

The H4n is nice little pocket recorder...but if you are going to "up the ante" on mics and pres, you may want to consider also going with a standalone (or better quality) converter box.
The H4n is only giving you 16/44.1...which is OK for basic demo audio stuff...but even some of the least expensive standalone converter boxes will give you 24/96 these days, and 24 bit is where it's at with digital...and that's where you want to be if you are going to upgrade your other gear, IMO.
I would not be worrying about getting a better preamp just to run through the H4n.

You can still hang on to the H4n for those times when you're away from your rig, like if you go on a trip or whatever, and you want a way to put down basic ideas with guitar & vox...etc.

Having checked, I'm pretty sure the H4n is 24/96 but turns out the loop station I'm using is 16/44.1 which is a damn shame as everything goes through it.

Other than that, I take your advice and I guess I will have to get moving to the next realms of home recording. In short, you're right. Thank you.

It shows that in MTR mode it does 16/44.1...that's the multitrack mode...but it's 24/96 otherwise.

Not sure how that all falls out with the H4n.
How do you use it?

Oh, erm, I always use the MTR mode. Heh. I guess I'll get hold of a decent interface and start recording to my computer. Thanks again.
