Continuing a newbie thread from yesterday about connecting vocal mic to record to computer via mic-in jack

Obviously a pre-amp such as M-Audio DMP3 would be desirable. It's also not cheap.

What would happen if I connected a Shur SM58 through something like a Whirlwind Impedence Matcher or something comparable? Would it be likely to achieve noticeably better results than merely using a cheap mic plugged directly into the computer's mic-in jack?

I would say no, becuase either way, you are still using the total POS "preamp" (if it can be called that) in the built in sound.

BTW, compared to what you could spend on mic pre's, and what many people even on this BBS spend on pre's, the DMP3 is damn cheap (pricewise :) ), and a great deal. Save up for it. It's worth it.

There are also some cheaper options for pre's. An Audio Buddy will work, and is les than a DMP3. I've heard there might be some issues with an Audio Buddy, due to it only having +42v Phantom, but with an SM58, this won't be an issue. There are even cheaper options than an Audio buddy. Go to one of the sites that lists Pre's, and check them out. Right now I see an add for zzsounds on my screen...

The only kinds of mics that I am familiar with are condensor, dynamic, and ribbon. All require a preamp. Note that only the condensors and one dynamic (that I know of) require phantom power. There are now USB mics that plug directly into a USB port, but I believe those have a pre bundled in the mic. There is simply no getting around the need for a preamp if you want to use a mic that meets any acceptable audio standard.
