Gibson is about to start making a (non-Gibson, non-Epiphone branded) line of guitars for Wal-Mart. I would not be at all surprised if the money in question is related to that line.
Oh dear God. So Gibson is going to create their equivalent of First Act guitars? Now THAT's depressing news. :(

One question is what you can expect to buy for 53M. That's not a lot of cash in some circles. For example EBay just bought Skype for around 3B.

A Wal-Mart Les Paul?

Just when I thought I had control over the gag reflex.

He's right. Fifty three million is NOT a lot of money in the mergers and aquisitions world. Probably more in line with the costs to retool for a new line of in-house designed guitars than to give you enough money to buy a whole different company. I'll bet that Light has nailed it as far as identifying what that money is pegged for.

Yes, it's peanuts and Light's thoughts make sense. However the article (sorry, it's on a specialist private equity subscription site) identified it as funds for an acquisition.

Well, they could always offer cash PLUS stock for whatever they're looking at. So the purchase doesn't necessarily have to be limitted to something that costs 53 million.

I know they ain't perfect - but The Les Paul is just my #1 guitar of choice. I just love em.

Looks like they might buy something overseas. At least that is how I read it.

I think they are looking into buying the line of Estaban guitars, hats, and glasses.  :D :D
