Woah, I just realized how old i really am. My first song was Red River Valley followed shortly after by Wildwood Flower...then I discovered rock n roll.

Teenage Kicks by the Undertones. What a riff!!
Great song. John Peel's favorite if I recall correctly. I saw the Undertones a few months back, though they're not quite the same without Feargal.

"House of the Rising Sun" on a big ole Harmony Sovereign in '74 at Ithaca College. Still have the guitar and can still play the tune.

NO WAY!!! I have that guitar! It was in my house for years, and it was the first guitar I learned on.

Not only that, but House was also my first song that my sister's boyfriend taught me on it.

I was up at their house in CT. in Dec. and it was still there. It has bridge trouble, though, it pulls up and also yanks up the top, it's been replace at least 2x.

Actually, the first song on piano was "Froggy... someshit" I hated being forced to read the notes and play songs that totally sucked.

My parents had some old Pete Seger instructional records that were cool. I learned a lot from them they had a little pamphlet also, I think it's still around somewhere.

Hey nobody took CellarDweller's challenge.

I'm going to say that "I am a Viking" was NOT one of the first songs you learned on guitar - unless you started that day with 20-30 bottles of Red Bull. What do I win?
Free cup of coffee and a firm handshake. Congratulations... Thanx for playing :D

No matter how I wished to be able to, no amount of time, caffiene, alcohol, marajuana or any combination thereof would do it, I wonder if I could even play it now...

Old Dog Blue.

I had a dog and his name was Blue
Betcha five dollars he's a good dog too.

I went totally the other way. The first song I learned how to play was "Wild Wood Flower" by June Carter Cash. Nice blue grass stuff.

Later on, the first song I could play all the way through was "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by Scorpions...
Wow...that one came out of nowhere....Wildwood Flower was the first song I learned too!

wow, the Smithsonian Institution bought Folkways catalog and sells it now, that's amazing and it's all on custom cdr or digital downloads.

Holy cow, that's the one, how'd you find that site??? On CD, but not w/ the graphics, I don't get that, yet. Gotta spend some time there. wow.
Um, actually I work for Folkways. Pete Seeger is one of our big names, and I knew instantly what you were talking about.

BTW the on-demand CDR's come with a photocopy of the original liner notes.

Wow, that's cool, I see that your location would make sense since that's where SI is. So, do you actually get to walk thru the SI to get to your job everyday?

I once had a job at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and it was hard to explain how awesome it was to walk thru there, on a different path, every single day and see stuff so often of such a high asthetic. It was really hard to get home on time, and I walked to work, and I worked in the photo library where all of it was on film so I saw what was cataloged also. Large format film, really high quality....

Nah, our office isn't by the museums. We're in an office building near Chinatown. But I'm a native Washingtonian and have spent countless hours at all the museums.

My room mate taught me a long fingerpicking thing with lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs. It was in D and used a lot of dominant 7ths. I played it over and over for about a year. People would get up and leave when they saw me pick up the guitar....
