the paint chipped on the back of my les paul, a little bit of wood came up with it, it is right on the edge and i an worried about it spreading, what should i do? sand it??

Just play it. Battle scars aren't bad.

I'm not saying such to be mean. Guitars are meant to be played, and (more than likely) they're going to get dinged.

I wouldn't marr the finish to sand out a chip.

I mean, how big of a chip is it, and how much wood came off?

Just curious, though, is this a Gibson or Epiphone?

And if you're really concerned about it, if it's new, take it back and exchange it.

Put some liquid nail in there and call it a day.

it is a 2000 gibson les paul, and the chip is about an inch long and a quarter inch wide running along the back edge near the jack.

I don't know... I've had a Les Paul Custom since... 1991 or so? And its got a few battle scars from the early days that haven't spread at all. I don't know if the finish will chip any further- just because mine hasn't doesn't mean yours won't.... but mine hasn't. None were right by the edge, though... Maybe take it to a luthier (guitar builder/tech- a GOOD one!) and see what they say?

Of course, I was 15 or 16 when the worst stuff happened and the internet wasn't even availible then. I didn't know what to do, didn't know who to ask, and so did nothing. Hasn't been a problem.

Sorry to hear about the nasty knock on the guitar, though. :(

Good luck,
Chris

its not the chip thats the proble i could care less about that its not visible (this is my main performance guitar) i just want to make sure that it wont spread to the front, allthough my strap tore during a stevie ray vaughn song... so ironic maybe it was ment to be..\

thanks for the tips i decided to just put some nail polish on to stop it from spreading

hmmmm

I had some problems with the paint on my Les Paul.... A little chipping near the glue seams...

Any pictures?? I don't think anyone here is really qualified to suggest a repair with what information you provided...
