How do you try them out?

stores citing "health laws" as a reason is a bunch of crap, as airborne viruses/bacteria can not live on a mic diaphragm or grille--there's nothing for them to live off of. it's simply a way for them to rope you into getting stuck with a mic you don't like or want.....and it's a way to prevent people from "renting" a Neumann. in other words, to keep you from "buying" a U87, using it for 2 weeks on your project, and then returning it. it's sad that the stores have to do this, but some people are dishonest.

as for trying a mic in a music store--how else can you try it? it's not like you're going to put your lips on it, and even if so, see the above point. :D when you buy a mic from a music store, don't you take that risk that someone has already spat into it anyway? how can you ensure that it's never been used? and how do you handle buying a "used" mic?

and let's take this to another level......when you go to a "pro" studio to record or to a club to perform and use the house mics (or the studio's mics), do you really think about whether those mics have been cleaned or who's previously used them? ;)

personally, i've bought a number of mics (both used and "new") and have never worried about this problem. i won't buy a mic online from a store that won't let me return it unless it's a mic i KNOW i want to keep.....and i won't buy one from a brick and mortar store that won't let me try it out first.

cheers,

Personally, I'd go for the v67. I've had both and found the 990 to be lacking on everything, while the v67, colored as it is, still seems to be a good mic for the price.
